WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR LONG BEACH

Ryan Briscoe and No. 8 TNT Chevrolet

Remember the Time: This will be the first time that Briscoe has competed in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach since he won the pole position at the street circuit in 2012. Briscoe led five laps at the 2012 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and crossed the finish line in the seventh position.

Race Rewind: Briscoe and the No. 8 NTT DATA Chevrolet came out strong in the practice sessions leading up to the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg qualifying, finishing in first position in the three combined sessions. Qualifying brought difficulties with the wet track conditions and an issue with tire strategy, ultimately placing Briscoe in the ninth position for the starting lineup for the 110-lap race. Briscoe held down the ninth position from green flag until moving up two spots to the seventh position on lap 23 despite reporting quite a bit of understeer early in the race. The NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing crew completed their first pit stop for fuel and tires on lap 26 and reentered the field in the 13th position. Following an incident with the No. 2 car on lap 40 that occurred while exiting pit lane, Briscoe reported that the front wing had been damaged, but was not significant enough to replace. Briscoe entered the pits in the seventh position on lap 53 to make his second pit stop of the day, and reentered the field in the 12th position. Over the next 20 laps, Briscoe steadily moved back up to the ninth position where he would remain until lap 96 when the No. 67 car passed him for position. The No. 8 NTT DATA Chevrolet would cross the finish line in 10th.

Strong Start: Briscoe and the NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing crew started the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season strong at the season opener in St. Petersburg. Briscoe finished in first position for all three combined practice sessions during the weekend and qualified in the top 10 in the ninth position. Despite front wing damage that plagued the No. 8 car throughout three-fourths of the race, Briscoe still managed to finish his first race back as a full-time driver since his 2012 season with Penske Racing in the 10th position.

2014 Standing Start Debut: The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will feature the first standing start of the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season. This will be the first time that a standing start will take place in Long Beach since the final Champ Car World Series race in 2008 and the second time since the Formula One era ended in 1983. The Verizon IndyCar Series debuted the first standing start in the second race of the Toronto doubleheader in the 2013 season. The only other standing start for the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season will take place at the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 10.

Road Warrior: Throughout Briscoe’s nine-year career in the Verizon IndyCar Series, he has recorded seven wins and has won 13 pole positions. Out of his seven wins in the Verizon IndyCar Series, three of those have been on a road or street course. In terms of his 13 pole positions, six of those have been on a road or street course.

Briscoe On Long Beach: “I’m really excited to be headed back to Long Beach this weekend, especially since I haven’t been there since I won the pole position in 2012. I think we had a really strong weekend at the season opener in St. Petersburg with a top-10 finish and we can only get better from here. The team has come together and I’m just ready to see what we can do in Long Beach.”
