Celis Jr, who comes from the city of Tehuacan region in south-east Mexico, was quick to impress the team on his debut outing in the 400hp GP3 car, setting mid-table times as a leading rookie on both days of the first pre-season test.

“I am really excited to be part of Status Grand Prix and to race in GP3,” said Celis. “I am looking forward to continuing to improve as a driver and to show my skills. The car is definitely fast, and I am still adapting, but the transition was easier than I expected and with more time on track I am going to keep moving forwards.”

Celis Jr, whose father Alfonso Celis Sr has raced GT and touring cars in Mexico and the USA, is the second driver to be announced by Status GP for 2014, joining GP3 Series returnee Nick Yelloly at the Silverstone-based team.

Team Principal Teddy Yip Jr said: “We’re very pleased to welcome Alfonso to the team after such a promising initial test. For a young driver he got to grips with the car and tyre very quickly and was immediately competitive. His application and willingness to learn is strong, and we look forward to working with him through the initial learning curve that will bring results as the season progresses.”

Status GP are at Jerez this week for the second official GP3 test which commences today and concludes tomorrow, Friday 11th April.
