Status GP Jerez GP3 Test Day 1 Report

Status Grand Prix driver Nick Yelloly ended the first day of the GP3 Series pre-season test at Jerez on top of the times.

Following his first outing with Status GP in the recent test at Estoril, the Englishman set an excellent lap time in the latter stages of the morning session at Jerez to go 0.244 seconds faster than his closest opposition.

With the Andalusian circuit traditionally slower during afternoon running, the Status GP squad concentrated on refining its race set-up, 23-year-old Yelloly going seventh fastest in this session. His morning benchmark remained unbeaten through the rest of the day.

The team also ran New Zealander Richie Stanaway, who returned to single-seater action two weeks ago at Estoril, where he drove on one of the two test days.

Still adapting to the latest-spec GP3 car, Aston Martin Racing driver Stanaway – whose recent experience has been in GT machinery - was also learning the circuit but set a time good enough for sixth in the morning session.

Mexican Alfonso Celis Jr, who today was announced as a full-season signing with Status GP, continued to make strong progress as he makes a big step up the ladder from the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup.

The 17-year-old was 19th quickest in the morning session, impressing the team with his aptitude in learning and adapting to the very different demands of the 400bhp GP3 car and the Pirelli P Zero tyres.

The test continues for a second day on Friday.

Driver quotes:

Nick Yelloly
“This morning we had our base set-up on and we were quick out of the box. I did my time on the second set of new tyres – I didn’t think it was that good a lap, but it was good enough to be two and a half tenths clear! Then we did race runs to see how the new Pirellis behave. We made big changes over lunch to try to get our race-run pace even better, which I think we did. I’m confident now that we have good set-ups for qualifying and racing, and I think that with the car we had this morning I could have been fastest in the afternoon.”

Richie Stanaway
“It’s a steep learning curve for me, with the car, the tyres and the circuit. I’m chipping away and I’ve just got to keep improving, and I should get more comfortable for the second day, which is good because I only had one day in the car at Estoril. I didn’t feel as though I got a good enough, representative lap in the afternoon but it’s been a good day and we’ll see what we can do tomorrow.”

Alfonso Celis Jr
“I’ve been improving through the sessions, and I was planning to put new tyres on at the end of the day but then there was a red flag, which stopped the session early. I’m happy with progress. It was a very positive day, I’m starting to feel comfortable with the car – which is very important – and I’m getting used to the speed. I know I have to push more, but this is testing and the important thing is to learn.”
