Lynn And Bernstorff Second And Third Fastest In Jerez

It was another strong two day test for Carlin’s GP3 team as Alex Lynn, Emil Bernstorff and Luis Sa Silva returned to their cockpits as the Series moved to Jerez, Spain for the second official pre-season test. All three drivers once again focused on a variety of set up, qualifying, race runs and starts throughout their testing programme as they prepare thoroughly ahead of the season opener in Barcelona next month. A competitive final day saw two Carlin cars in the top three with Lynn second and Bernstorff third.

Following on from the first official pre-season test in Estoril, Portugal the GP3 Series made its way over the border to Spain for the second of three tests before the racing action commences. Reacquainting themselves with their GP3 machines on Thursday morning it was once again Lynn who made an early impression; the Red Bull Junior quickly moved his way to the top of the timing screens in the dry weather.

Throughout the remainder of the day the tyre strategy between the Carlin drivers was somewhat split with Lynn and Sa Silva, who was driving Jerez for the very first time, using the morning session to concentrate on their fast laps while Bernstorff used his new tyres in the afternoon. As a result Lynn was second quickest in the morning and Bernstorff the fastest in the afternoon. However the combined times for the drivers saw Lynn set the second fastest time of the day, Bernstorff was fifth and Sa Silva in 14th – the Angolan still getting to grips with a track he had yet to experience in his racing career.

Testing on Friday was a different affair for the drivers with much cooler conditions; as a result Bernstorff quickly took to the circuit first in an effort to maximise this. The cooler conditions saw many new tyre runs take place during this time. After all laps were complete Lynn was once again near the front of the field in second with Bernstorff close behind in third while Sa Silva was making progress in 17th.

The Carlin men mainly focused on their race runs for the majority of the afternoon session, only taking to the track to complete faster laps when race runs and practice starts were complete. However running was a slightly limited affair for Sa Silva who remained in the garage for a while with an engine issue; finishing the day 17th overall.

For Lynn and Bernstorff, they continued their strong presence in the top three and ended the day as the second and third drivers respectively.

Lynn said of the Jerez test, ‘It’s been another very good test for us and we’ve gone through everything that we wanted to go through. The race runs went well and more importantly we worked very hard on our race starts – because you have to be able to get off the line fast during the race. The car has been great to drive and it’s a nice reward to be competitive in every session.’

Bernstorff added, ‘I’m happy to have been in the top three for most of the sessions here in Jerez – it proves that we’ve been strong and that were looking good. We’ve continued the good progress we made from Estoril and now we have to take that on to Barcelona next week.’

The third and final GP3 Series test takes place 16th – 17th April in Barcelona.
