Wayne Taylor Racing Lands Konica Minolta Sponsorship

By Brian Bielanski, NASCAR Wire Service

Wayne Taylor Racing has inked a multi-year sponsorship deal with Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. to sponsor the team’s No. 10 Corvette DP in the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

The deal was announced at the Tequila Patrόn Sports Car Showcase at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. Team owner Wayne Taylor indicated the team’s primary focus is on the No. 10 car but did not shy away from the possibility of adding a second car in the future.

"After winning the Rolex Series championship last year, and with the merger of [that series] and the American Le Mans Series this year, we knew that we would need to elevate our game in a big way if we were to continue competing for championships in the new TUDOR [Championship]," said Taylor. "Having a business leader such as Konica Minolta come on board as the title sponsor of my organization just made sense."

In Saturday’s one-hour, 40-minute race, Taylor’s sons Ricky and Jordan will pilot the No. 10 in its first race with the Konica Minolta livery.

"It’s certainly not every race that we make an announcement like this and I think that should speak volumes about the significance of what we are here today to announce," said IMSA President and Chief Operating Officer Scott Atherton. "We have a lot of teams in our paddock who set a very high bar for their on-track performance, and we have other examples of teams that do an exceptional job on the business side of bringing active partnerships and true sponsor relationships into their environment. In Wayne Taylor Racing, you have that rare combination of both."

BMW Team Rahal Letterman Lanigan driver Andy Priaulx had not turned a single lap on the street circuit at Long Beach before Friday morning’s practice, but he wasn’t worried. He prepared with some time on iRacing.

Priaulx is making first time visits to many of the tracks on the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship schedule and he plans to use a simulator to learn as much as he can before he gets to the first on-track practice. That plan appears to be working at Long Beach.

"I did some laps on the simulator at home and just worked a little bit with my engineer before I arrived and I felt like I knew the place as soon as I drove out of the pits" said Priaulx. "It gives you instant lap times immediately and it’s a good mental rehearsal."

The three-time World Touring Car Champion thinks simulator work is a required component for any top-level driver. "If you want a professional career in your future whether it’s F1 or DTM or something else you need to become a good simulator driver," he said.

Corvette Racing knows how to get around the street circuit at Long Beach. They have won four times in seven attempts, all in ALMS GT competition, the last time in 2012.

The team has two chances to win the inaugural TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race at Long Beach with Gavin and Milner piloting the No. 4 Corvette C7.R, and Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia at the wheel of the No. 3 entry.

Saturday’s TUDOR Championship race is the first of six races to air live and flag-to-flag on FOX Sports 1. In addition to Long Beach, races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen International, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Road America and Virginia International Raceway also will air live on FS1.

Live coverage of the Tequila Patrὀn Sports Car Showcase begins Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
