Street Talk From Risi's Fisichella And Cameron

As Risi Competizione’s two drivers took to the track in the No.62 Ferrari 458 Italia for the opening two hours of practice on the streets of Long Beach, they were both cool as a cucumber.

In the gleaming red Prancing Horse, former F1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella set out for his first laps of the storied track, using all the experience accrued in his 229 Grands Prix and three years of World Championship GTE competition. The track was dirty, the conditions were still cool at 7:40 am as he set out, but Fisichella was soon up to speed and his lap times were getting quicker and quicker with every lap.

The Italian said of his first experience on the Californian streets: "It’s very different to what I am used to but I like it and it was a good session. I learnt the track and I think we are quite competitive and consistent which is what we need to be at this stage. Our main problem has been mid corner understeer, which we will be able to fix, but it’s a good start."

At exactly the one hour mark, Fisichella handed over the Ferrari to newcomer to the Houston-based team, Dane Cameron. The young Californian driver has driven at Long Beach before but not since 2008 in a formula car and, until this morning, his time in the 458 had been limited to 30 brief laps at Houston Motorsports Park. He quickly became acclimated to both track and machine, and with some new Michelin tires on the car towards the end of the session, was able to put in a lap time of 1:20.335 which placed him p6 in the GTLM class and only 0.53s from the fastest runner in the session, the No.4 Corvette.

The former Star Mazda champion and Rolex Series GT winner (25) has quickly found himself at home at Risi Competizione, and said afterwards: "It was a good little session and I’m still getting acclimated to the car, getting comfortable and figuring out what makes it tick. I’m very much enjoying the team and everyone’s made me feel incredibly welcome - I feel like it’s a pretty good plug and play! We’re trying to figure out how much the circuit’s going to change for later this afternoon and how much to adjust the car, but we’re all getting up to speed and we’ll try to execute well for this afternoon and the race tomorrow."

A 30-minute practice session will take place at 5:05 pm, immediately followed by qualifying.
