Justin Wilson Looking To Move Forward In Grand Prix Of Long Beach

Justin Wilson could only shake his head after a small mistake cost him a shot at a big qualifying result on Saturday. The Briton, who raced his way from deep in the pack to finish third in last year’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, will have to work his way up from the fifth row on Sunday after a quick brake lock-up kept him from setting the ultimate lap time in qualifying.

The Dale Coyne Racing driver has years of experience at the challenging temporary 11-turn street course and will look to use that to his advantage as he aims to move forward in Round 2 of the Verizon IndyCar Series championship with his No. 19 Boy Scouts of America Honda.

“We’re still tweaking it a little bit here and there, but the car feels great,” said Wilson of the qualifying run. “The tires were the right temperature, the car was good, that lap was going to be the lap to get us to the Firestone Fast Six. I’m just so disappointed because we were going to be easily through to the fast six with a time that was first or second. I just braked a fraction too late and locked it up over the bumps. I had to go off in the run-off and I just over did it so we’ll try to put it back right in the race. I’ve done it before and I know we can do it again.”

Wilson, who started off the weekend by posting the third quickest lap of the first practice session and then ran sixth quick in Saturday morning’s practice, will start from 10th on the grid in Sunday’s 40th running of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

The race will be televised Sunday afternoon live on NBC Sports at 4:00 PM (ET).
