From yesterday’s best, the 21-year-old took a further 1.8 seconds off his lap time and was closer to pole position that at the season opener in Qatar by seven-tenths of a second. The rider still has much to learn but this shows he is going in the right direction. The qualifying session saw Esteve Rabat taking pole position from former JiR rider Johann Zarco, with Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter in third place.

Tetsuta Nagashima, Team JiR Rider: best lap 2m 13.352s

“I feel the same as yesterday really, that we have made more progress. We made some changes to the bike and these worked very well so that I could ride more confidently and I had quite a positive feeling with the machine. I tried to improve my lap time towards the very end of the qualifying session on the last lap and I had a very good pace but then I made some mistakes and so I couldn’t improve the lap time as I wanted. Despite this my feeling with the bike has improved but we will still try and make some more changed in warm-up tomorrow and as a result we can therefore be more competitive in the race.”

Grand Prix of The Americas – Qualifying session results:

1. Esteve RABAT - 2'10.135

2. Johann ZARCO - 2'10.401 - +0.266s

3. Dominique AEGERTER - 2'10.422 - +0.287s

4. Xavier SIMEON - 2'10.666 - +0.531s

5. Julian SIMON - 2'10.702 - +0.567s
