2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Four-Wide Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 9

Spencer Massey has always said that as long as you're in the 16-car NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series eliminations field that you can win.

He will test that theory Sunday when they start from the No. 9 spot for in the 5th annual NHRA Four-Wide eliminations at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher team with Spencer has won the last two Four-Wide titles and reached the championship foursome from No. 13 spot in 2011.

Spencer's best qualifying pass in his 100th career event came during Friday evening's session with a 3.827-second lap at 321 mph. He was unable to make a full pass during both of Saturday's qualifying sessions at the facility near Charlotte dubbed the "Bellagio of Drag Strips".

"At least we got all of our tire-smoking out of the way," Spencer said. "It's kind of been rough for us so far but Phil (Shuler) and Todd (Okuhara) clearly know what they're doing because they've had so much success here. We'll be ready for tomorrow."

The Four-Wide features heats of four drivers in two pair of lanes separated by a center dividing wall at the world's only four-lane dragstrip. The top-16 qualified cars meet Sunday in elimination rounds again in four-car heats with the first two crossing the finish line advancing to the next round. In the championship round, four finalists race for the event title, runner-up position and the other two earn semifinals championship points.

The Battery Extender team will be in a flight of dragsters with Shawn Langdon, Steve Torrence and Terry McMillen.

"Shawn and Steve are some of the best leavers out there so I'll have to be on my game and that's the best for me. I love that pressure and knowing that I have to cut a good light. It's definitely going to be a great race.

"We're going for our third. I know I've never won three times at any track so I'm definitely after that three-peat. That would be pretty cool."

No. 1 Qualifier: Shawn Langdon (Al-Anabi Racing) 3.753 sec., 321.81 mph
