2014 NHRA: Lucas Oil Rider Arana Sr Ready To Show Why He Is Called 'The Hammer'

In only the second Pro Stock Motorcycle race of the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Lucas Oil rider Hector Arana Sr. isn't pleased with his results, but he knows anything can happen this Sunday at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte.

Arana didn't have the qualifying sessions Friday and Saturday that he thought his Lucas Oil Buell was capable of running overall. His fast lap came early on in Q2 with a 6.954 at 193.99 mph that placed him No. 14. On Sunday Arana will face off against No. 3 Andrew Hines, No. 6 Matt Smith, and No. 11 Shawn Gann in the first round of eliminations.

"I really don't know what to expect in the first round tomorrow," Arana said. "Every time I think something is going to go the way I planned it doesn't. It's really frustrating to have this recurring issue.

"I would be competitive if I could just solve the issue I'm having at the starting line. I keep lighting up the rear tire and can't control it. If I don't fix that, then Sunday will be the same result that I have been fighting all weekend."

But Arana didn't get the nickname "Hector the Hammer" by just giving up that easily. He still has the will and the fight to pull out the upset against the rest of the Pro Stock Motorcycle competition on Sunday.

"We're going to keep trying to fix this issue until we can't anymore," Arana said. "I'm not giving up anytime soon. If I can't fix the problem Saturday night, I'm going to sleep on it and see what happens Sunday morning when I wake up. I'll make the call before eliminations on how I think I'm going to do in the first round."

Arana will look to overcome the issues that have plagued him so far this season when final eliminations at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals start at 12:45 p.m. ESPN2 will carry the action in tape delay beginning at 8 p.m., Sunday.
