Tomac, Osborne Snare Top-10 Finishes In Seattle For GEICO Honda Team

The GEICO Honda team of Eli Tomac and Zach Osborne came away with a pair of top-10 finishes at the Monster Energy Supercross race Saturday night at CenturyLink Field.

Tomac secured a fourth-place finish -- his second-best effort this season -- in the 450cc main event, and Osborne rallied to a sixth in the 250 class.

Tomac, whose best finish in his first full season on a 450 was a second at Indianapolis, improved on his ninth-place finish a week ago in Houston.

"Overall, pretty satisfied on the night," Tomac said. "It was a pretty long 20 laps, but I'm getting stronger and stronger."

Tomac finished fourth in his heat race to grab the final transfer spot to the 20-lap main. There, he made a good start before settling in the top five and chasing third-place finisher Ryan Dungey.

"It was kind of an average start," Tomac said. "I was somewhere around the top seven and then made a few passes early on. I ended up settling in fourth place. Dungey was in third the whole time, and we were kind of yo-yoing each other back and forth, but I could never really catch him. He rode a strong 20 laps and never made a mistake, so I could never quite get to that third place.

"I kind of wish it was a little bit better finish in the heat to get a better gate pick, but at least I'm making slow improvements."

Tomac and the rest of the riders had to face a deteriorating track throughout the day, though decent weather Saturday made it better than past Seattle races.

"This was the most hard-packed Seattle I've seen," Tomac said. "It wasn't hard-packed, but it had a decent base. Normally this place gets really, really bad, and this year it was kind of like a normal racetrack."

Osborne made a spirited ride in his 250 heat before finishing second, but in the main a slow start hampered his progress.

"I just blew the start," Osborne said. "I was like 15th on the start and had a mediocre ride to sixth. I feel like I really let one slip away from me tonight. Being on the podium seemed to be within my reach after the heat-race ride. I'm a little disappointed."

Osborne chipped a bone in his thumb after a fall in practice, but he continued to race well the rest of the night. In his heat, he battled back and forth with Malcolm Stewart before finally pulling away.
Then leader Dean Wilson went down, and Osborne made a couple of moves for the lead before settling for a close second.

"The heat race was really good for me," Osborne said. "I got off to a decent start, and then I had a good battle with Malcolm. Dean crashed, and I was really close to taking the win."

Osborne raced on a muddy track in Seattle a year ago, so a rutted track posed no major issues this year.

"The track was pretty rutted, and you had to be on your toes all the time because all the ruts were different," Osborne said. "It's normally really soft, so considering all of that, to have a 60-degree day with sun and no rain, it was pretty awesome."
