After three consecutive first-round losses in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Matt Hagan saw a win light during the first round of Four-Wide competition on Sunday before being ousted in the semifinal round of eliminations.

"It was definitely a relief to get that first-round win," Matt said. "It felt like it had been forever and these guys have been working so hard so that was great for us to get past that slump."

The Mopar team led by Dickie Venables made their best pass of the weekend in the first round with a 4.087-second lap at 314 mph to win their quad.

But in the semifinal round the 10,000-horsepower Dodge Charger R/T slowed near the finish and was eliminated from Four-Wide competition.

"It looks like we are making some headway," Matt said. "We can do everything one step at a time, it has to come together round by round. Dickie is doing a great job. It's just going to take a little more time. It's the same old race car, we just have a few new parts.

"A majority of the time I think it comes down to the conditions and being in the lane we need to be in. We'll get back after it in Houston and hopefully we can go some rounds."
