2014 NHRA: Goodyear, NHRA pros at 4 Wide

Jimmy Allund knows how to win drag races.

An eight-time Pro Stock champion in Europe, Allund took his first victory in National Hot Rod Association Mello Yello Drag Racing Series competition when he won the 4 Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway. Driving for Greg Anderson while Anderson recovers from surgery, Allund became the 58th driver to win in NHRA Pro Stock racing.

“I remember Greg told me (at the start of the season), ‘Drive it like you stole it,’” Allund said. “Now I’m thinking about stealing it.”

Allund, of Norrkoping, Sweden, was one of four drivers to win at the 4 Wide on Goodyear tires, but he was already very familiar with Goodyear’s Pro Stock tires. He uses the same Goodyear rear tire, the D2200, in Europe that the NHRA Pro Stock stars use in the US.

The other Goodyear-shod winners at zMAX included Antron Brown (in Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Corey Michalek (Top Alcohol Dragster).

The 4 Wide Nationals is the only NHRA national event where the teams use four racing lanes at once. Allund said, “To be able to knock out nine cars in one day is pretty awesome.”

Erica Enders-Stevens, who was in the final round with Allund, continues to lead the Pro Stock standings with 426 points. Jason Line, Allund’s teammate, is next with 384.

Brown won the Top Fuel final despite turning in a slower time and speed than two other drivers in the same race. His .042-second reaction time got Brown started before the other three and helped him get the win.

“You just want to be on time,” Brown said. “You get your work cut out for you.”

Brown’s win was his first in the 4 Wide event but it was the fourth for Don Schumacher Racing. It was Brown’s 27th career Top Fuel win.

Brown sits second in Top Fuel points behind Doug Kalitta by a 485-460 margin.

Hight’s victory was remarkable because he finished second in his first two races of the day before winning the final. He was the second driver to do so in the 4 Wide Nationals.

“We had table scraps, you know?” Hight said. “And we went out there and won it.”

It was the second win of the season for Hight, who maintained his lead in the Funny Car standings. Hight has 488 points, the largest point pile in NHRA Mello Yello drag racing. John Force is second in the title hunt with 453.

Goodyear employs about 69,000 people at manufacturing plants and facilities in 22 nations. Based in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear is among the largest tiremakers in the world and is the worldwide leader in race tire innovation.
