Carlin Charged Up For 2014 Championship

Carlin’s FIA Formula Three European Championship team will be back in action this weekend at Silverstone as the 2014 season kicks off in earnest following two pre-season tests in Hungary and Austria. Jordan King, Jake Dennis and Ed Jones all completed a solid test programme in Europe with the team and came away from the four days of track action feeling confident ahead of the first round of the season.

In the lead up to the 2014 season the three Carlin men spent four days of testing in Hungary and Austria where over the course of the track action they completed a high number of laps and worked on a variety of test programmes. By the end of the fourth day of testing all three Carlin drivers were comfortably in the top six around the Red Bull Ring.

The Championship will get underway over the Easter weekend at the legendary Silverstone circuit as the FIA Formula Three European Championship field come out in support of the World Endurance Championship. Silverstone has provided Carlin with some fantastic racing in the past and last season saw Harry Tincknell take a strong win during the opening race of the weekend. The first race will mark the start of an 11 round calendar which sees the field visit a wide variety of tracks including a trip to Russia in July, as part of the DTM bill, for the seventh round of the championship.

Reigning British Formula Three Champion with Carlin Jordan King finished the 2013 season as the top placed rookie in the FIA Formula Three European Championship and now looks to continue his strong progress at the front end of the championship. King said of the upcoming season, ‘Everything went really well for us in testing so I’m feeling pretty confident ahead of Silverstone. Of course you can never really tell where you are until the first qualifying session of the year especially considering there are so many variables such as new engines this year. But testing went well and I think we will be able to pick up where we left off.’

Racing Steps Foundation driver Jake Dennis will be participating in his rookie season in the FIA Formula Three European Championship. The British racer, who was the 2012 Formula Renault 2.0 NEC Champion, looks ahead to his first season with the team. Dennis said, ‘Being a rookie this season I definitely want to make an impression, I think a realistic aim of being within the top five is possible. It’s all going to come down to qualifying and I will be pushing hard for a good result. However I know that it is a long championship and that it is important to get some solid points on the board.’

UAE based racer Ed Jones enjoyed a strong test with the team in Austria, finishing the final day with the fourth fastest time the rookie driver was quick to get used to his Volkswagen powered Dallara car.

Jones, who is the reigning Formula Three Open Champion, said of the first round of the season, ‘All in all I think we made a good step in pre-season testing so it’ll be great to be out at a track I really enjoy driving. When I last raced at Silverstone I won the first race of the weekend and came third in the second so it’s definitely somewhere I enjoy. We also looked good there last season in testing. However things have changed since then with the new engines and the paddle shift on the car but we’ve got on top of that nicely in the past few weeks. I’m feeling confident and ready for the weekend, the goal needs to be consistency and not get carried away. Picking up points is important at the beginning of every championship and then we can look ahead to the next rounds after a solid start and see where we are at.’

Free practice on Friday gets underway 09.00 local time with a total of three races taking place over the course of the weekend.
