Taggart Set for SCCA Majors at VIR

Jim Taggart, driver for Taggart Autosport, will contest this weekend’s SCCA Majors event at the newly-repaved VIRginia International Raceway in the GT-2 class in the No. 61 Taggart Autosport Porsche GT3 Cup entry. Taggart is one of 10 GT-2 entries for the Majors race.

“Being close to home and racing at VIR is always a great time,” said Taggart, who also ran a few winter SCCA events in Florida in the team’s Lotus Evora GTS race car.

“The repaved track has more grip and is a bit wider in areas. I would expect resulting lap times to be much quicker and track records to fall. Also, thanks to the hard work of the VIR staff, we also have a beautiful, newly paved paddock.”

Taggart most recently competed in the GT category at St. Petersburg in the Pirelli World Challenge, with a much faster, Porsche 911 GT3 R.

The entry list for GT-2 is a diverse and competitive one as the Taggart Autosport Porsche will go up against a few Corvettes, a Panoz GTS, Nissan 350Z, Dodge Viper and various other high-power sports cars plus reigning GT-2 National Champion Andrew Aquilante.

“It will be fun to get out in the Porsche Cup car again,” noted Taggart “It’s not nearly as fast as our GT3 R, but is a blast to drive. It also keeps some of your skills fresh, not relying on things like paddle shifters, traction control and ABS.”

The Sports Car Club of America has turned its National events into higher-profile SCCA “Majors” weekends, with participants getting more marketing muscle and on-site support from the club, while earning points for the all-important SCCA National Championship Runoffs.

The VIR event marks rounds seven and eight of SCCA’s Eastern Conference Majors Tour, and bolsters a bigger entry list as VIR is attractive to drivers up and down the east coast.

For Taggart, VIR is a home track, and the sports car driver has thousands of laps around the 17-turn Alton, Virginia-based circuit.

Taggart’s GT-2 class is in Group 6, meaning he will share the track at the same time with comparable classes such as GT-1, GT-3, A-Sedan and T1, meaning traffic and slower cars could become a factor.

Following load in on Wednesday afternoon to the VIR paddock, Thursday is testing and Friday gets going quickly with a 20-minute qualifying sessions at 11:00am and 4:00pm local (eastern) time. Saturday continues with a 10:00am warm-up session followed by a 3:05pm race start, with a race distance scheduled for 25 minutes. Sunday gets more interesting, with a 16-lap or 40-minute race set to go at 2:40pm.
