Status Grand Prix finished pre-season testing for the 2014 GP3 Series looking in good shape for the opening round in three weeks’ time.

Nick Yelloly, Richie Stanaway and Alfonso Celis Jr all made progress on the second and final day at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, which will host the first two races.

Englishman Yelloly, who was fastest overall on Thursday’s opening day of the test, was fourth quickest on Friday, just over two tenths of a second off the pace.

With the track offering more grip than on Thursday, Status GP had started the session with a set-up based on the one Yelloly had used to go fastest on the first day, to see how it reacted to the different conditions. The team then dialled the car into the grippier surface, pushing Yelloly into contention on his second new set of Pirelli P Zero tyres.

New Zealander Stanaway experimented with different set-ups in the morning in order to further improve the team’s knowledge bank. In the afternoon, he went 10th fastest with a run on used tyres.

Mexican teenager Celis made more progress as he gets to grip with the jump up to GP3. He had a strong run on new tyres in the afternoon to go sixth fastest, getting ever-closer to the ultimate pace.

All three drivers completed very encouraging race runs, boding well for the first race weekend, which supports the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix on 9th-11th May.

Driver quotes:

Nick Yelloly
“This morning we were just two tenths off – the balance was good; not as good as yesterday but we know why. Other than that we were looking at race runs – I’ve done four this week, trying to do as much as we can. We’re very competitive on race runs, which is nice because that’s where the points are. We know we’re in the ballpark and we’ll be right at the front, so I’m looking forward to the races!”

Richie Stanaway
“We were working through various things and experimenting. We know where we can potentially be, so when we get everything together in the right way we’ll be up there. The past couple of days haven’t been too representative for me, but it’s not about the ultimate lap time, it’s about what you need to learn before you go racing.”

Alfonso Celis Jr
“We still have to work but overall it was a very positive day. We did race-run simulations and I am definitely getting used to the tyres. We are getting much closer to the pace and I’m really beginning to feel the peak of the tyres. I’m happy with progress and I’m feeling good before the first race.”
