Bernstorff Tops Final Pre-Season Test

Carlin’s Emil Bernstorff finished the final day of pre-season testing as the quickest driver in Barcelona today, ahead of the GP3 Series season opener at the Spanish circuit next month. The GP3 rookie, who has been consistently quick throughout pre-season testing, set the quickest time of this morning’s session, which was also the fastest time of the two day test overall. Team mate Alex Lynn was also on the pace with the third fastest time overall while Luis Sa Silva made it three Carlin cars in the top six.

The drivers were greeted with perfect conditions this morning, as the final day of testing got underway. Angolan racer Sa Silva was the first driver to exit the pits, keen to get his test programme underway.

All three Carlin drivers elected to complete their new tyre runs in the morning and consequently were consistently at the top of the timing screens. Red Bull Junior Lynn was the first Carlin man to top the times, remaining there until he was topped by team mate Bernstorff.

With the best times set earlier on in the morning, Bernstorff remained the quickest as the morning session came to a close, while Lynn was third and Sa Silva sixth.

With no new tyres left for the afternoon session, the three Carlin men used the remaining track time to work on longer runs on older tyres. With plenty of useful information gathered the afternoon drew to a close, with the morning’s times remaining the quickest and therefore Bernstorff quickest of the day – and also the two days overall.

Reflecting on his final on-track preparations, Bernstorff said, “I just had a lap where I put everything together and didn’t make any mistakes and was able to make the most of the car’s capabilities. The car feels really good; the team have done a great job and it’s good to see all three cars up there. It’s a nice confidence boost to finish the final test quickest, particularly at the track that we’ll race on first, but we’re very aware that it’s our qualifying and race performances that count.”

Trevor Carlin added, “The team have done a fantastic job during the off-season and in testing to really develop the set-up and also importantly work very closely with the drivers to give us the best possible start to the season. Luis has really come on in leaps and bounds and the performances from Emil and Alex as rookies has been incredibly impressive. We’re encouraged by the pace we’ve shown so far, but there will still be work to do before the season kicks off properly next month.”

The GP3 drivers will return to Barcelona for the season opener on 9 – 11 May.
