The Origin of the No. 83: Charlie Kimball’s car number (83) has a very special meaning to not only him, but also his father, Gordon, and team owner, Chip Ganassi. In 1983 Chip Ganassi had his best finish at the Indianapolis 500 while driving a car that was designed by engineer and car designer, Gordon Kimball.

Keeping It In The Family: The driver of the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Chevrolet is not the only Kimball with racing in their blood. Kimball developed his passion for racing after watching his father, Gordon, work as a design engineer for racing powerhouses, McLaren and Ferarri. Kimball’s sister, Rachael, has also made a career out of the sport, working with the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team.

Riding The Waves: Kimball’s need for speed is not limited to the racetrack. Over Easter weekend, Kimball took his brand new Axis Wake A24 speed boat out on the water for the first time this year. Boating is one Kimball’s many hobbies and in March, he ran a contest on Facebook asking fans to name his boat. The winner of the fan-powered naming contest was “Open Wheel Escape.”

Finding New Roads: All four Chip Ganassi Racing Teams (CGRT) Indy cars are utilizing the Chevrolet 2.2-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine for 2014 season. The engine produces well over 600 horsepower and close to 300 lb. ft. of torque.

@racewithinsulin: Had a really solid day of testing at @TXMotorSpeedway. It was a bit windy but we got a lot accomplished!

Charlie Kimball and No. 83 Novo Nordisk Team

Race Rewind: Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing (NNCGR) had a disappointing end to a promising start at the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Chevrolet made a steady jump from the starting position of 19th up to the sixth position over the first 35 laps of the 80-lap race. Kimball‘s lap times throughout the first half of the race rivaled the race leaders’ best lap times. After the field was restarted on lap 40 following an incident, Kimball immediately pulled into the runoff area in turn one and reported heavy smoking coming from the car. After quickly reviewing the data, the NNCGR team along with the Chevrolet engineers decided to retire the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen car for the day.

Last Time At Barber: Kimball finished fourth in the 2013 Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. After posting a fast-six qualifying effort and finishing up the pre-race warm-up in first position, Kimball started the race from a career-best fifth position. The Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi team showed strength early-on and advanced to fourth-position within the first lap. After the initial lap, the race would go under its first and only caution period for debris in turn 9 after contact in the back of the field. Six laps into the 90-lap race, the course would return to green, where Kimball battled to hold-off the No.19 and keep fourth-position. On lap nine, he would continue to show strength by passing the No. 25 to nab third. As cars began to cycle through pit stops, Kimball advanced to second position, until he made his first stop of the race on lap 26 for fresh primary tires and fuel. With 47 laps remaining, Kimball led a total of three laps on the 2.38-mile road course, marking the first time he has led laps on a street/road course and the second-time he has led laps in his Verizon IndyCar Series career (Indianapolis 500, 2012). With 24-laps remaining, the No. 83 would come in for its third and final stop from third position to take alternate tires and fuel. While in fifth-place with 13 laps to go, Kimball passed the No. 12 car to take fourth-position, where he would ultimately finish.

Moving On Up: Of the 13 road and street course races on the 2013 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule, Kimball finished 10 of those in a higher position than where he qualified. Kimball’s best career finish of first came after qualifying in the fifth position at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio. He made his biggest jumps through the field in both races of the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit at Belle Isle, moving up 11 spots from the 25th position to the 14th position in the first race of the Belle Isle doubleheader. He then matched his 11-spot effort with even better results in the second race of the Belle Isle doubleheader by moving from 18th to seventh.

Practice Makes Perfect: Chip Ganassi Racing Teams (CGRT) Verizon IndyCar Series drivers Kimball, Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, and Ryan Briscoe tested at Texas Motor Speedway on March 16. The four CGRT drivers along with 14 other car/driver combinations battled strong winds and cold temperatures as they tested for the first time on an oval since the 2014 season began. The Verizon IndyCar Series will return to Texas Motor Speedway for the Firestone 600 on June 7 and will race on the first oval of the season at the 98th Indianapolis 500.

Kimball, On The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama: “I’m really looking forward to going back to Barber Motorsports Park. The Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing team had such a strong race weekend there last year, from practice to qualifying to almost grabbing a podium race finish. I have no doubt the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Team Chevrolet will be quick again when we roll out on Friday."
