Reid Wilson Heads To Memphis International Raceway With Points Lead In Sight
A strong start to the 2014 X-1R Pro Cup Series season for Reid Wilson (@reidwilson66) has the sophomore driver in sight of the points lead as the tour heads to Memphis (Tenn.) International Raceway for Saturday’s KOMA Unwind Liquid Relaxation 150.

Wilson heads to “The River City” on the heels of his second top-five finish of the season on April 5 at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway. His third-place finish, matching a career-best has the teenager phenom sitting just eight points behind series leader Caleb Holman.

“Hickory was such a good race for us and it helped keep our momentum alive heading into Memphis this weekend,” said Wilson. “We had a strong No. 66 Bojangles’ Chevrolet there. We had to battle back through some adversity though. On the second-half restart, the field bobbled and I was shuffled back, but quickly I got into a rhythm and we were able to get fight back to third. We just ran out of time.

“Overall, I was happy, but disappointed at the same time. I think we continued to turn some heads with our performance and our relentless attitude. It’s going to pay off eventually with a trip to Victory Lane.”

Matching his season-best performance from Southern National (N.C.) Motorsports Park in March, Wilson tallied his fifth career top-five in 12 races and second straight podium run at HMS.

Looking ahead, the 17-year old driver has never seen the 0.75-mile paved oval of Memphis International Raceway, but neither has his peers, which puts the Reid Wilson Racing (RWR) team on equal footing heading into this weekend’s activities.

“There’s a lot to take in this weekend at Memphis,” Wilson explained. “It’s the biggest track for us to compete at, not to mention my biggest track ever, but there’s also a lot of unknowns as far as what to expect. We’ll have plenty of practice to dial in our No. 66 Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits Chevrolet, but the key to success I think will be tire conservation and keeping up with the track’s changing conditions. It’s just a wait-and-see game right now, I think.”

The soon-to-be 18-year old added, “We’ve had such a great start to our year that we need to do everything in our power to keep it going. 150 laps may not sound like a lot, but for the X-1R Pro Cup Series tour, it is, especially at a track the size of Memphis. We just have to be smart and take what’s given and most of all, try and have a “rock and roll” finish!”

With a five-week break on deck following Saturday’s KOMA Unwind Liquid Relaxation 150, the Huntersville, North Carolina promises no rest for the weary.

“No matter the outcome on Saturday, we’ll be focused on Motor Mile in June,” Wilson sounded. “I’m also going to be doing some community events during the down-time to keep myself and our great marketing partners in the spotlight because, without them, I would not be here.”

In addition to Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits, Cheerwine serves as an associate marketing partner on the No. 66 entry. Veteran short track specialist Mike Herman Sr. will serve as the crew chief for the racer, who in 2012 at age 15, was dubbed as one of “NASCAR’s future prospects to watch” by Motorsports Analytics.
