DragonSpeed Racing News – 25 Apr 14

The Florida-based DragonSpeed team arrives at Alabama’s Barber Motorsports Park for this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge double-header on a high following another brace of strong results at Long Beach on 13 April.

A crowded support program for the IndyCar feature meant only one race for the PWC field at the classic southern California street venue, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The DragonSpeed duo of Mike Hedlund and Henrik Hedman continued their rise up the series ranks, with Hedlund claiming his second consecutive top-ten result and Hedman scoring his first podium finish in the amateur GT-A class.

After another strong practice showing in seventh, Hedlund lined up 11th on the maximum-capacity grid of 40 cars with Hedman alongside him, just 0.2s slower and second fastest in GT-A. Both made clean getaways in the tight confines of the shoreline circuit, Hedman momentarily besting Hedlund before the pair reverted to their starting positions. Hedlund renewed his battle from the St Pete opener with seasoned pro Tim Bergmeister’s Porsche, taking the checkered flag in ninth place after several challenges to the German were rebuffed. Hedman meanwhile fought Bergmeister’s GT-A teammate Michael Mills for most of the race, reaping his reward with second in class and 11th overall.

DragonSpeed team principal Elton Julian said, “We had a really encouraging weekend at Long Beach, with both our drivers continuing to improve their pace and racecraft while keeping it off the walls for the second street race in a row. Having Mike and Henrik so closely matched is definitely accelerating their progress, and the crew is on top of their game, especially with the return of our regular race engineer, Mark Schomann. The next step is to break out of the GT midfield, and we’ll be working hard on that at Barber. It’s a new track for the series and will let the drivers take a more aggressive approach than at St Pete and Long Beach, both of which could help us.”

The Barber races will be webcast live at world-challengetv.com at 5.00 pm on Saturday 26 April and Sunday 27 April, with highlights shown on NBC Sports Network at 4.00 pm on Saturday 10 May.
