McClelland's Central Open #2 Effort Ends On High Note Despite Early Exit

Even though pro angler Mike McClelland wasn't able to make the first cut at this weekend's Central Open #2, he knows momentum will still be on his side when he leaves Red River in Shreveport and heads to the next Bassmaster Series tournament.

The Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler may have had a slow start on Thursday, but he overcame his deficit to jump the leaderboard more than 70 places on Friday. A consistent second day propelled McClelland into contention, but he barely missed the cutoff mark, finishing in the 25th position.

"I probably made some better decisions Friday than I did on Thursday," McClelland said. "I had two different areas that I was planning to fish for this tournament. Looking back at it now, Thursday I chose an area that ended up ultimately being the wrong place. I went into that area and spent nearly three and a half hours but never caught a good fish. I had a limit fairly early on and never did improve much that whole day. Friday I went to an area that I have always been able to catch decent fish. Fortunately, that change worked out in my favor and I caught a good bag.

"I really had a lot of fun today on Red River. The cool thing was I caught a lot of fish using a variety of baits. It was just one of those days where everything seemed to fall into place for me. I think if I had caught a decent fish on the first day of the tournament I'd be out fishing again Saturday."

While McClelland was hoping to bring home another victory this weekend, he is still leaving Red River with a smile on his face and a check in his hand, ready to go out for the next tournament.

"It's not that the water conditions were horrible, but fishing at Red River wasn't quite as good as we all expected it to be," McClelland said. "The water was really muddy at a lot of places where it normally isn't. I think that played into why areas that normally would be good fishing spots just weren't productive this week.

"I don't think I ever saw a single boat fishing anywhere on the main river, which is unusual. Normally at this time of the year there would be a lot of fish caught there. All I know is that it certainly was a difficult April tournament on the Red River."
