Bourdais, who had driven the No. 11 Team Hydroxycut - KVSH Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone machine to consecutive second place showings on the speed charts in practices two and three, went out in group one in round one of qualifying. He posted the sixth fastest time in his group of 11 drivers recording a lap of68.8706seconds on 2.38-mile, 17-turn permanent road course and thereforeadvanced to round two of street/road course qualifying. In the second round, which featured the six fastest drivers from group one and the six fastest from group two, Bourdais could only manage the 11th quickest lap recording a time of 69.1395 seconds. He therefore did not advance to the third and final round of qualifying. Prior to the start of the final round, series officials conducted a review and cited Bourdais for interfering with Ryan Hunter-Reay. The penalty assessed voided his two fastest laps dropping him to 12th on tomorrow's starting grid.

"Well that definitely was not what I expected," Bourdais said. "I'm very disappointed. The problem was we developed some understeer. We will just have to get that resolved tonight and give it our best tomorrow."

Regarding the penalty Bourdais said, "I didn't see him and no one told me he was coming. Suddenly I looked into my mirrors and there he was. My bad."

KVSH Racing partner Jimmy Vasser said, "We didn't let him know Ryan was coming. It was our bad."

Bourdais had his best qualifying effort in four appearances at Barber surpassing a 17th place starting spot in 2012. His best finish is ninth also in 2012. This is also his best starting position in three races this season. In two previous starts he qualified 13th and finished 13th in the 2014 season opener at St. Petersburg and qualified third and third and finished 14th at Long Beach.

The 35-year-old, who was born in Le Mans France, is the only driver to win four consecutive U. S. open-wheel championships (2004 -2007). He has won 31 races (eighth all-time) and earned 31 poles (seventh all-time). Bourdais competed in 27 Formula One races (2008 - 2009) and has an impressive endurance racing record including a victory at the 2014 Rolex 24-Hour and a third at the 2014 12-Hour event at Sebring.

The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network at 3:00 p.m. (ET)
It can also be heard live on IndyCar.com, IndyCarradio.com via the IndyCar14 app or on Sirius 213 XM 208.
