2014 Richmond: Chevrolet NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Recap

Jeff Gordon led 173 of the 400-laps at Richmond International Raceway in an effort to put Chevrolet in Victory Lane for the fifth time in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Gordon narrowly missed his first win of the season by finishing 0.946 seconds behind the race winner in his No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet SS. The finish helped him maintain the overall points in nine of the 36-race season.

AJ Allmendinger scored his best finish of the season and second top-ten finish by taking sixth place in his Bush’s Grillin’ Beans Chevrolet SS. The finish propelled him to 17th in the overall point standings. Allmendinger was followed by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in seventh place. Earnhardt, Jr. was a contender for the win for much of the night until late race brake issues plagued the No. 88 National Guard Chevrolet SS team.

Ryan Newman earned his fourth top-10 finish of the season ending the night in the eighth position. Martin Truex, Jr. in the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet SS was able to rid himself of the gremlins that have afflicted his team for the first part of the 2014. Truex, Jr.’s 10th-place finish at RIR was his best this season with the Colorado-based team.

Joey Logano (Ford) won the race and Kyle Busch (Toyota) was third, Brad Keselowski (Ford) was fourth and Matt Kenseth (Toyota) finished fifth to round out the top-five finishers.

The series goes from one of the shortest tracks on the schedule to the longest as they head to Talladega Superspeedway on May 4th.
