Rentsch Off To A Flyer

Reigning Australian Off Road Champions, Shannon and Ian Rentsch have kicked off their 2014 season in style, finishing second outright at the Kalgoorlie 400 desert race held in Western Australia over Easter. The Victorian based team completed the five laps of the 80km course, just outside the gold mining town of Kalgoorlie, in a time of 4 hours 48min 16 seconds. Greeting the chequered flag in their #Aus1 Hogs Breath BF Goodrich Jimco just 2min 01 sec behind the race winning Trophy Truck of #413 Beau Robinson.

“We started in fourth position after the top ten shoot out, which wasn’t ideal as we were caught in the dust on Saturday afternoons first lap. Despite a little bit of an overheating issue in the hot conditions we managed to maintain our place on the road.”

“On Sunday mornings first two lap section we had a good run and moved up in to second. But after the service break we then got caught up in the dust of another car that was limping along on the first of the final two laps, which cost us some time. Once we got past him, we had a clear run on the final lap, our quickest of the weekend, but we couldn’t make up enough time to take the win.”

“To get second was a good start for us in the championship and that’s what we came here for.”

The Kalgoorlie 400 was a new addition to the AORC in 2014, with the WA round previously held in the wheat belt at Hyden. The event kicked off on Thursday night with a display outside the historic Exchange Hotel in the character filled town centre, before settling in to the new Western Desert Racers facilities at the Sand Drag Complex on Good Friday.

“Kalgoorlie proved to be a very tough track, probably one of the toughest I have raced on for a while, so it was good to get the finish. The track chewed up a lot over the weekend. Some spots became really deep with bull dust and the cars were bellying out and it was a challenge just to get through, even if you didn’t have any dust in front of you.”

“Many teams suffered flats over the weekend, but our BF Goodrich tyres performed well and stood up to the challenge.”

We’re now looking forward to getting up to Finke on the Queens Birthday weekend for round 2 of the championship, and try to go one better than last year and regain the King of the Desert title.”

SR Racing’s Shannon and Ian Rentsch are proudly supported by: Hogs Breath Café, BF Goodrich, Fox Shocks, Albins, Motec, Peter Kittle Motor Company, Hella, PWR and Dirtcomp.

Keep an eye out for the official AORC coverage on 7mate and Speed in the coming weeks.
