Draco Drivers Experience Up-And-Down Race 2 At Alcaniz

It’s been an up-and-down Sunday for International Draco Racing at Alcaniz, in the closing race of the World Series Renault 3.5 weekend at the Spanish venue. After cruising to a points finish with Pietro Fantin in Race 1, the Italian squad performed without an hitch in Qualifying 2. The 22-year-old from Curitiba delivered a brilliant performance to hit the front row, and only a technical issue to his fuel pump prevented him from having his say for the pole.

Luca Ghiotto also performed well in 8th. Unfortunately, the 19-year-old from Vicenza saw his race end too early as he stalled his car on the grid and lost the chance to challenge the front of the pack.

On the other hand, Fantin was off to a great start and even managed to fight for the lead at the first corner. Despite during the first part of the race he ran consistently in second place, after the pit-stop he suffered from a performance fade. In the closing stint he was forced to give several positions back and had to content with 12th.

The team and both drivers will be back running in round 3 of the 2014 series, scheduled for May 25th at Monte Carlo. The Formula Renault 3.5 cars will be lining-up at the world-famous street venue for the traditional single race before the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Pietro Fantin - Q2 P2; R2 P12
“The qualifying pace was great and only a fuel pump issue deprived us from the chance of fighting for the pole position. The start of the race has been very good and the same goes for the pit-stop. Unfortunately, in the laps after the tire changes we were losing a lot of ground, five tenths of a second only in the third sector. In the time before the next round at Monte Carlo we have to analyze the problem with the race pace, which actually is the last one we got, and understand what did not work today”.

Luca Ghiotto - Q2 P8; R2 DNF
“There isn’t much to say except that I committed a mistake at the start, stalling on the grid. Luckily I was only slightly hit by one of the cars I had behind. I can’t wait to get back on track for a prompt rebound and I’m satisfied with the improvements in Qualifying. I’m looking forward to race for a rebound at Monte Carlo”.
