ADAC GT Masters
Volkswagen Junior van der Linde wins on sports car debut

Bookmark and Share
Kelvin van der Linde, 2013 Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup champion, has further enhanced his reputation as an exceptionally talented driver. On his debut weekend in the ADAC GT Masters in Oschersleben, the 17-year-old South African won alongside René Rast (D) in an Audi R8. His success saw van der Linde crowned the youngest driver ever to win a race in the ADAC GT Masters. The dominant display from van der Linde and Rast, who also came through Volkswagen’s junior programme, was underlined by pole position and the fastest lap in the second race of the weekend. Watched by Volkswagen World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier (F), van der Linde and Rast ended the opening race in an excellent second place. After a good hour or racing, the duo came home just 0.3 seconds behind Mercedes drivers Maximilian Buhk (D) and Maximilian Götz (D). Van der Linde and Rast lead the overall standings in the prestigious racing series with 43 points. “Kelvin drove a great race. He did not make any mistakes and withstood some serious pressure from the opposition,” said Rast, who was full of praise for his new team-mate van der Linde.

ATS Formula 3 Cup
Two wins and the overall lead for Markus Pommer

Markus Pommer (D) claimed a brace of victories “powered by Volkswagen” on the opening weekend of the ATS Formula 3 Cup in Oschersleben. Having led the first race from start to finish, the talented driver from the Lotus team also secured victory in the final race, ahead of Nabil Jeffri. The Malaysian driver had previously won race two in another single-seater racing car powered by a Volkswagen engine, coming home ahead of Indy Dontje. With two runner-up spots and a third place, the Dutchman was the only driver to end all three races in a podium position. Double-winner Pommer (58 points) tops the championship standings ahead of Jeffri (42) and Dontje (41). The fastest single-seater racing series in Germany features a new engine concept in 2014. For the past two years, Volkswagen had provided every car with an exclusive engine with Push-to-pass technology. In 2014, however, the teams will line up with Formula 3 engines from various different suppliers.

ADAC Formula Masters
Three different winners on opening weekend in Oschersleben

The ADAC Formula Masters season kicked off in style, with the opening three races in Oschersleben producing three different winners. First to win was 19-year-old Dane Mikkel Jensen, who came home 3.648 seconds ahead of Maximilian Günther (D). The 16-year-old German, who finished runner-up in the 2013 season, gained revenge in race two, crossing the line with a slender 0.356-second advantage over Jensen. The dominant duo from the first two races then missed out on the podium in the final race: Jensen finished fifth, with Günther down in eighth. Victory in the third round of the series “powered by Volkswagen” went to 16-year-old Fabian Schiller (D), ahead of Tim Zimmermann (D) and Switzerland’s Ralph Boschung. In the overall standings, Jensen takes a three-point lead over Maximilian Günther into the second race weekend of the year in Zandvoort, Netherlands (9 to 11 May).

Volkswagen Castrol Cup Poland
Fluch bags brace – football legend Dudek puts pedal to the metal

Marcus Fluch claimed a highly-acclaimed double success on the opening weekend of the Volkswagen Castrol Cup Poland. The 25-year-old Swede came home ahead of Maciej Steinhof (PL) and Jan Kisiel (PL) in the opening race at the Hungaroring. Race two saw South Africa’s Jeffrey Kruger overtake Steinhof on the final lap to finish runner-up behind the dominant winner, Fluch. Making his debut as a permanent starter was Polish football legend Jerzy Dudek, who had previously made guest appearances but is set to contest all seven race weekends in the popular series this year. The former Real Madrid and Liverpool goalkeeper finished 20th and 19th. Fluch leads the overall standings with 50 points, ahead of Steinhof (40) and Kruger (38).

FIA World Rallycross Championship
Marklund Motorsport under starter’s orders in the World Rallycross Championship

Marklund Motorsport is all set to take on the big-name opposition in the FIA World Rallycross Championship with the Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar. Former World Rally Champion Petter Solberg (N) and ex-Formula One World Champion Jacques Villeneuve (CDN) were among those to underline their ambition at a media day ahead of the season-opener on 3 and 4 May in Montalegre, Portugal. However, Global Rallycross Champion Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen (FIN) and his team-mate Anton Marklund (S) have set their sights on winning the title for Marklund. The Swedish team’s Rallycross Polo generates over 560 hp and takes just 2.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. In February, Volkswagen Motorsport entered into a three-year exclusive partnership with Marklund Motorsport for the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
