2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA SpringNationals Event Recap: Second Round

Spencer Massey's Battery Extender Dragster performed exactly how it was supposed to during the second round of Sunday's NHRA SpringNationals eliminations at Royal Purple Raceway.

But the Don Schumacher Racing dragster of Antron Brown in the opposite lane just performed better and Massey will have to wait until the NHRA Texas Fall Nationals in September to try and get his first Top Fuel title in his home state.

The Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher dragster bested three-time series champion Larry Dixon, who made his 2014 debut, in the opening round of eliminations with a quick pedal job by Massey to earn the round win.

For the second round, the bright red Battery Extender rail was paired with teammate Brown for the early afternoon match under partly sunny skies and humid conditions and Brown's car posted the quickest elapsed time of the round at 3.778-seconds.

"We were just on a tough side of the ladder today," Spencer said. "With Antron (Brown), Shawn (Langdon) and (Doug) Kalitta on our side, that's just tough. If you're going to win from that side you have to earn your keep.

"The car ran exactly what we wanted it to. We set it up to run a 3.83 and it did. It's good that our race car is listening to what we're saying but Antron went out there and ran a 3.77 in the heat. In our mind that was out of nowhere, we didn't think he was going to do that."

The Battery Extender team will leave Baytown with confidence in how their car is reacting to the decisions the crew chief duo of Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara make.

"Our car is doing what we want it to and we couldn't really say that at the beginning of the year. We're getting stronger with every round. We just need to twist the knobs a little bit more and go some more rounds and be at the right place at the right time."

Massey also enjoyed the company of many friends and family at the Texas raceway that is almost a second home to him.

"We had a lot of friends, family and crawfish out here this weekend. It was a lot of fun."
