2014 NHRA: Another Race, Another Semifinal Finish For Nobile

In a remarkable show of consistency, NHRA Pro Stock driver Vincent Nobile reached his fifth semifinal in six starts this season behind the wheel of the Mountain View Tire & Auto Service Chevy Camaro. Nobile’s latest strong showing came during this weekend’s event at Royal Purple Raceway just outside of Houston, Texas.

“Over the last year or so one of the things that we’ve been lacking is consistency,” said Nobile. “Now, it appears that we’ve making a lot of progress in that area. Of course, making it to the semifinals is a double-edge sword. On one hand, we’re happy to get a couple of round wins but on the other hand, we know this team is capable of much more. We have the ability to go to final rounds and win races and that’s our next goal.”

Royal Purple Raceway has long been one of Nobile’s favorite race tracks. The site of his first professional victory in 2011, he also won the event in 2012 and entered this year’s race with a strong 9-1 record in elimination rounds. After qualifying in the No. 5 spot, Nobile put together two more round wins when he defeated Larry Morgan and Shane Gray during Sunday’s final eliminations. Nobile’s shot at a third Houston victory came to an end when he lost a close race against Allen Johnson in the semifinals. Nobile got off the starting line first but could only run a 6.63, a run not quick enough to compete with Johnson’s 6.58.

“We were the first pair of Pro Stock cars out after the track was prepped and we don’t quite have a handle on that yet,” said Nobile, who was competing in just his second event with the Mountain View team’s new Chevy Camaro chassis. “The car shook the tires and I did what I needed to do to get it to the finish line but it wasn’t the run we were looking for. We should have been able to run as quick as Allen, or at least very close to him. We’re making progress with the new car but we still have a little work to do.”

There is one area where Nobile has continued to shine and that is on the starting line where he has consistently been quicker than his opponents. This weekend, he once again had some of the best reaction times in the class with lights of .013, .026, and .022 on race day. Nobile admits that his confidence as a driver is at an all-time high, particularly in the last two races with the new race car.

“This Camaro was built just for me and it is the most comfortable race car I’ve ever sat in, “Nobile said. “When you are comfortable in the seat, it makes everything easier and I think that’s why I’ve been pretty consistent on the starting line. We still only have a few runs on this car so I don’t think we’ve seen its potential yet.”

After the first six races of the 2014 season, Nobile is ranked fourth in the NHRA Mello Yello Pro Stock points, and he trails KB Racing teammate Jason Line by just 23 points, which is approximately equal to one round of racing. After a short break, the Mountain View Tire and Auto Service team will be in action on May 16-18 at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
