Gaulding Holds On To Finish 11th At Richmond

Gray Gaulding and the No. 20 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Chevrolet team faced adversity both on and off the track this weekend in Richmond.

The weekend started off with Gaulding posting the 17th quickest time in first practice on Thursday with a 22.908. Gaulding knows what he needs at the three-quarter mile Richmond International Raceway, and radioed into Crew Chief Ryan McKinney, "I'm
too tight, we don't have the turn in the center that we need."

Friday morning started off along the same lines, "still fighting tight through the center of the corner"said Gray Gaulding following final practice and he posted the 12th quickest time with a 22.675 at 119.074 MPH, and knew they were headed in the right direction with the changes

Qualifying was set for 2:10 PM, Gaulding would be the 27th of 37 cars to take their attempt at two laps of qualifying. With a lap time of 22.324, Gaulding set the 7th quickest time and would start on the inside of row four.

With weather moving into the Richmond area, NASCAR put everything on hold. The Blue Ox 100 was originally scheduled for 9:40 PM, following the conclusion of the NASCAR Nationwide series race. Due to the amount of rain and the ending of the NNS event, NASCAR made the decision to postpone the Blue Ox 100 until Saturday at 9AM.

When the green flag dropped on Saturday morning on the Blue Ox 100, Gaulding immediately took charge moving into the 5th spot on lap one. Gaulding settled into a solid 5th place run throughout the early stages of the event.

The first caution flag flew at lap 27 which led to three additional caution periods before getting back to a good green flag run at lap 64. Gaulding continued to fight a tight handling chassis and would not rotate through the corners the way he needed it to and moved into the upper groove holding on for all he had.

Gaulding slowly drifted back outside the top-10 and into 11th where he would battle on the outside for the final 23 laps, holding onto the 11th place finish that would move him into second position in the points standings.

Next time out for Gray Gaulding and the No. 20 Krispy Kreme Chevrolet team will be Casey's General Store 150 at the Iowa Speedway on May 17th, 2014.

Gray Gaulding's Post-Race Thoughts:
"It's very frustrating knowing we came here in 2013 qualified on the pole and led over 50 laps. We had good speed at the beginning of the race but just continued to get to tight. Ryan and all the guys back in the shop will put their heads together and figure this out before we get to Iowa."

Ryan McKinney's Post-Race Thoughts:
"Gray did an awesome job all weekend with feedback and the guys on this Krispy Kreme team never gave up. We worked hard, unfortunately we just missed it a little. We will work over all of our notes the next few weeks and get everything moving forward going into Iowa."

Start: 7th Finish: 11th Drivers' Points Standing: 2nd (-18)
