Positive Progress For Grant After Anglesey Performance

George Grant’s partnership with Mission Motorsport continued to take major strides forward with another encouraging MaX5 Racing display at Anglesey Circuit last weekend (April 26/27).

Following a positive debut at Donington Park, Grant – alongside the official Armed Forces charity’s dedicated crew of mechanics – navigated his Mazda MX-5 Mk3 to a season-best result around Anglesey’s rolling International layout.

With a non-championship race included for the first time this season, coupled with a full day’s testing on Friday, Grant felt that additional track time allowed him to demonstrate his growing potential behind the wheel.

And despite April showers making conditions difficult to master towards the end of race one, the GGR Motorsport driver was pleased with his performance over an otherwise glorious Welsh weekend.

“I’m delighted with the level of progress that I’ve demonstrated over the last few days,” beamed Grant. “After extensive testing this weekend it was a fantastic feeling to be firmly in the mix. I can feel that I’ve dramatically improved, especially in terms of my confidence and aggression through the corners.”

Despite 18th position in Sunday’s final race proving his best result to date, it was the morning’s non-championship battle with fellow Mission Motorsport driver Lance Corporal David Birrell – who’s suffered the loss of both legs – that proved a personal highlight.

“It was terrific to be dicing with Davie during race two. It’s clear we’ve certainly upped the ante since Donington. Even though we use different versions of the MX-5, we were inseparable. It was great fun!”

Meanwhile, Grant admits that advice from race-winning driver Jonathan Cryer has proved invaluable not only to himself, but also for the entire Mission Motorsport team as they continue to develop.

“Jonathan’s experience has been vital in helping us to better understand the psychological side of motorsport, with this weekend undoubtedly a tipping point in recognising what it takes to compete mentally. I think everyone has stepped it up a notch.”

The already brilliant atmosphere within Mission Motorsport was boosted further knowing that they’ll return to Anglesey for the eight-hour Race of Remembrance in November that was launched on Saturday by Development Manager John Earp.

“A great event like this gives you a unique sense of balance,” admitted Grant. “Coming from a motorsport ‘background’ due to my father’s exploits means that this is second nature for me; I love to get stuck in. GGR Motorsport has lent its full support, with a four-man team already entered. I’m sure it’ll be a superb spectacle, but also huge fun for everyone involved.”

Grant’s immediate focus turns to Cadwell Park, as Lincolnshire’s undulating venue hosts round three of the series on May 31/June 1.

“Cadwell is a great circuit. Its extremely narrow and twisty layout means it’s one of the UK’s most challenging tracks. However, I’m looking forward to it.”
