Walker Anxious To Try His Luck On Toledo Bend Reservoir

After taking some time off, David Walker is ready to get back out on the open water and compete against the rest of the Elite Series anglers this weekend, May 1-4, at the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite Series event on the Toledo Bend Reservoir in Many, La.

The Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler is no stranger to the waters he will face this weekend. He knows that even though there is more uncertainty than usual when fishing there, his past success speaks for itself.

"This is a big, famous body of water that has a long history of producing really big bass," Walker said. "It's interesting because it's a border deal between Texas and Louisiana; half the lake is in Texas and half is in Louisiana. It's really all part of the Sabine River. In the past I've had good tournaments and bad tournaments here but more good than bad, so hopefully that continues."

Walker will be looking to score big early on when he launches at 6:20 a.m. CT from Toledo Bend Reservoir. He'll then see where he stacks up when the pro anglers weigh in at 3:15 p.m.

"The tournament will be interesting because with as many ways as there are to fish and as many places you can go, we could see a very wide spectrum of results," Walker said. "The lake is huge. It's much too big to cover all of it, so hopefully I'll find some spots and get lucky. So far in practice I haven't found any areas I really like.

"Right now the fish are doing everything you can imagine; they are acting crazy. You can try a lot of different things in all the different areas and you'll just get a grab bag of results. It's good and bad because usually you want to find one style that's working and then stick with it. At the same time, if your normal style isn't working, you can try something different on the same spot and it may just work."

At the last tournament where Walker competed this season, in Branson, Mo., a couple of weeks ago, fellow Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat angler Mike McClelland took home the victory. As happy as he is for McClelland, that win put a little extra pressure on Walker to do well this weekend.

"I'm so proud of Mike," Walker said. "That was a big win for him, for Cabela's, and GEICO. I need to get on it so I qualify for next year's Classic."
