Burton Racing Heads West to Monterey

After a month-long break between races, Burton Racing is ready to get back on track this weekend as the group travels over 2,000 miles to northern California from its Indianapolis-based home base for the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix powered by Mazda. Opening the season with two solid double top-10 showings in Daytona and Sebring, the team now looks to keep up that momentum in Round 3 of the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge championship.

The Burton Racing drivers bring plenty of experience and familiarity to the 11-turn, 2.238-mile Mazda Raceway circuit this weekend. Behind the wheel of the No. 23 BMW Automotive Chemicals/Excelda BMW 128i will be long time Burton Racing pilots Mike LaMarra and Terry Borcheller who finished on the podium with a third place result in last year’s Laguna Seca event.

Borcheller has several years of Daytona Prototype experience at the track including a run to the podium with a third place finish in his Laguna debut with Kodak-Bell Motorsports. LaMarra completed his first-ever Skip Barber Racing School at Laguna Seca and is eager to return to the scenic road course once again this year.

“I am really looking forward to Laguna!” said LaMarra. “Laguna is special track to me as it is where I got my start at Skip Barber. I have the most laps on this track of any track on the circuit. Last year Terry and I finished third and we are really hopeful for another podium finish this weekend. The competition is really tough, so we will need great teamwork and a good car to move up in the points. Monterey is one of my favorite places in the country to visit and Laguna is a special track with a lot of history. It would be a really special place for us to win. Like others, the team has been working really hard since Sebring to improve the car and I hope it pays off!”

The sister the No. 22 Gold Eagle BMW 128i of Connor Bloum and Greg Strelzoff sees two drivers that are excited about the West Coast stop on the schedule as both drivers consider the circuit their home track, with countless miles between them on it. Bloum calls San Diego, California home while Strelzoff resides in Los Angeles.

“I like Mazda Raceway a lot and feel really confident here since it’s basically my home track,” said Bloum. “I’m really familiar with this track and I’m looking forward to the race this weekend because I think both Greg (Strelzoff) and I can do really well here and the whole team has just been working really hard to get ready for it.”

Burton Racing completed a recent test in April and collected valuable data as the team focuses on the remaining races of the 2014 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season.

“The season has got off to a solid start for both our cars and I’m pleased to have the hard work and planning generate this kind of start to the year,” said team owner Keith Burton. “But we know we have to not only keep up with the solid finishes, but also keep improving and it would be great to be able to do that this weekend in Monterey. We are focused on continuing to build on what we’ve started so far this year. Our drivers and so many of the guys on the team have a lot of great memories from this track and hopefully we can create some new ones this weekend.”

The Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix will go green on Saturday May 3rd at 3:45 PM (ET). Live timing and scoring can be followed at scoring.imsa.com. The race will air on FOX Sports 1 on May 11th at 10:00 AM (ET).
