SCCA Majors Races At Blackhawk Farms, High Plains

Storylines/Things To Watch For
Major League: In September 2012, the Sports Car Club of America rolled out the U.S. Majors Tour as the top level of amateur racing in this country. The Majors Tour replaces what was previously called “National” SCCA racing, split into a season-long championship in four geographic Conferences. Now that we’re into Spring, the Northern Conference opens their season at Blackhawk Farms, while the Northern Conference continues at High Plains in Colorado.

SCCA Club Racers – The Best in the Country: There are lots of amateur road racing groups in the United States, but the clear leader of top drivers is with SCCA. Though most are weekend warriors who take vacations from their full-time jobs to attend races, it’s a craft taken seriously. Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti, and actor/driver Paul Newman got their start in SCCA Club Racing. More recently, you could have seen current stars Boris Said, Graham Rahal, Sam Hornish or J.R. Hildebrand at an SCCA Club race.

Heading North: While the Eastern Conference opened the first weekend of January and two other Conferences quickly followed, the Northern Conference drivers have been patiently waiting for their season to get underway four months later.

Many have already pulled their cars out of the garage for races in other parts of the country, which may just make the racing even closer at Blackhawk Farms – many of the winter gremlins and kinks are already worked out. 134 drivers are searching for opening round wins this weekend.

Plateau On The Plains: The Northern Conference is quickly approaching the season finale, with just the two Colorado weekends (High Plains and Pueblo) followed by Heartland Park Topeka on Labor Day weekend. Points are at a premium, and following the weekend, any drivers who have attended every event so far will have reached their maximum allowable races to count. Of course, any poor finishes can be replaced through the final four races, as the best eight results will count.

Track The Differences: The two events this weekend are at tracks that are very similar, hosting Club and amateur races throughout the year. Each have become a favorite to drive in their local areas. How they came to be, however, is very different.

High Plains opened in 2009 as a collaboration by a number of amateur road racing organizations in Colorado, including Colorado Region SCCA. The groups worked together to raise the money and form the group that still operates the track today, ensuring a place to race in the Denver area.

Blackhawk Farms has a longer history. The track was built in 1967 and is now owned by GT-1 racer Paul Musschoot, an SCCA GT-1 racer. Musschoot added a number of buildings and resources to the property in 2008, making it a prime Club Racing track in the country.
