Landy Shows Strongest Pace In Mazda MX-5 Cup Practice Two At Mazda Raceway

Sebastian Landy, of Great Falls, Virginia, tapped into his success from Sebring by setting the fastest lap during Practice Two, in preparation for Friday’s Round Three of the SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires, part of the Monterey Grand Prix Powered by Mazda. John Dean, of Sebring, Florida, and Christian Szymczak, of Palos Verdes, California, completed the top three, in that order.

In his No. 41 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5, Landy has started to make a habit of being toward the front. Following a pair of top-five finishes in the first two races, he has started to show he has the pace to be up front at different courses. During the session Landy’s fastest time around the 11-turn, 2.238-mile permanent road course was 1:42.466 (78.629 mph).

“We changed a couple things with the setup,” Landy said. “We were just trying to figure out, exactly, where we were. At this point, we’re pretty happy.

“I think this will be a good car for both qualifying and the race. The speeds have been consistent, and the car stayed neutral throughout long runs. A lot of that consistency has to do with our BFGoodrich Tires wearing very well.”

Again, Dean brought his No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5 home second in this practice session with a best time of 1:42.616 (78.514 mph). Dean said that he is pleased with the results of the run as qualifying is the next time these drivers will see the track.

“We tried to make some pretty big changes to see what the result was,” Dean said. “Sometimes you learn more from taking a step backward rather that forward. We try to find settings that work in all kinds of conditions. It’s always good to have that data, even if we don’t use it during this event.

“We sent a couple probes out there this session by making some drastic changes. Most of it I didn’t like, so we’ll go back to what we had before. I’m confident we’ll have a good setup for the race, but qualifying is always a little tricky. If we hit the sweet spot we’ll be in good shape, since qualifying is so important at this track.”

In the No. 34 ALARA Racing MX-5, Szymczak logged the third-quickest time of 1:42.633 (78.501 mph). While he has shown speed on the new tire compound, Szymczak has elected to sit out qualifying and both races.

“It will be an interesting race,” Szymczak said. “I won’t be part of the race since I am just getting some track time in preparation for next year. But I’m really excited to see what happens out on track, both today and tomorrow.

“Tires will be a big deal. As we saw in this practice session, the tires start out very quick but you can’t abuse them. Tire management and driving conservatively, at some points, may have an impact on who wins the race.”

Kenton Koch, of Glendora, California, made a big step between practices. He finished this session in fourth, at the controls of his No. 12 ALRAR Racing/Mazda Motorsports/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5, after setting a best lap of 1:43.134 (78.119 mph). That marked a large improvement from the 17th position in which he finished during practice one.

In fifth was Koch’s car owner, Ara Malkhassian, of Houston. In the No. 11 ALARA Racing MX-5, Malkhassian set a best time of 1:43.251 (78.031 mph).

Zach Lee, of San Antonio, Texas, set the fast lap in the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge class with a time of 1:45.157 (76.616 mph). He was followed by Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Connecticut, who stopped the watch at 1:45.163 (76.612 mph). Drake Kemper, of Toluca Lake, California, completed the top three with a lap of 1:45.243 (76.554 mph), in his No. 99 Royal Rugby SBMX-5.

The SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich Tires is on track for their 30-minute qualifying session at 3:30 p.m. (PDT) today, with Round Three’s race to follow at 5:45 p.m. (PDT). Round Four is set for an 8:00 a.m. (PDT) start on Saturday.
