Toledo Bend Event Leaves Walker Disappointed, Ready For Next Tournament

After a slow couple of days on the Toledo Bend Reservoir, pro angler David Walker tried to rally his way into the final elimination spot to fish again on Saturday at the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite Series event in Many.

The Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler brought in 12 pounds, 9 ounces on Day 2 for an overall total of 27 pounds, 8 ounces, just missing the cut to advance to Saturday by a pound.

"My first spot I went to Friday the fish actually started schooling on top," Walker said. "That's always a good sign because you know there's a lot of fish there and they are feeding. The problem though was the size of those fish. I just assumed there had to be some bigger fish in there.

"I tried everything to generate a bigger strike, including changing baits, trying bigger lures, and other techniques, but nothing seemed to work. Obviously, though, I stayed there a little bit longer than I should have. I could have moved around when that was going on and tried to find a better spot but I never did.

"That's how the fishing game is: It's all about execution and choices. I made the choices that got myself executed this week. I didn't lose fish, I didn't miss them, they just didn't happen. It makes for a frustrating event, but it's a little easier of a pill to swallow knowing little things happened, such as a broken line, that let them get away."

Even though Walker was frustrated with his results after Friday, he couldn't be completely disappointed. Toledo Bend is a known difficult body of water for anglers to succeed at with large weights, and he wasn't the only one who struggled this weekend.

"We had a little bit of a wind Friday, which is fine because you can move around, but you still have that surface being broken up," Walker said. "That is important to get the fish biting throughout the day. Where if it slicks off, it's really hard to catch those fish. Active fish just shut down when it gets like that. Friday I felt like there was enough wind to keep the bites going. I got plenty of bites but they were just the wrong size to help me move on to Saturday."
