Mcclelland Not Slowing Down In Evan Williams Bourbon Tournament

Trying to follow up his win at the last Bassmaster Elite tournament, pro angler Mike McClelland is consistently culling his way through the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite Series event on the Toledo Bend Reservoir in Many.

The Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler brought in 16 pounds, 1 ounce Thursday and 14 pounds, 14 ounces on Friday for an overall total weight of 30 pounds, 15 ounces that propelled McClelland safely into the top 50, in the 31st position, allowing him to fish again on Saturday.

"I really thought I had a little more than 15 pounds Friday," McClelland said. "This time of year the fish are really hard to judge. They're post-spawn, so they don't have big bellies. I knew Thursday was my better day, but I honestly thought I had a little better weight for Friday.

"It was really an odd day though. Thursday was pretty easy and I felt like I could do a lot of different things. I was actually able to gamble a lot Thursday, where Friday I only had two catches by noon. The afternoon I really had to buckle down and fish how I normally would.

"Saturday is going to be a day where I'm going to scramble again like I did Friday afternoon. If the shad spawn don't show up early enough in the day, I'll just pick a Flickin' Stick up and move around more."

The top 50 Elite anglers will launch Saturday at 6:20 a.m. CT. McClelland will look to make the final cut by bringing in another consistent bag when he weighs in at 3:15 p.m.

"The wind is always a key deal here, and it very well could have been why Friday was so slow," McClelland said. "Thursday the wind was actually blowing into the pocket where I was fishing while Friday there wasn't much wind at all. I'm sure the lack of wind was pushing the bait in late. In fact, the bait actually finally showed up, but it was after the bass were through their feeding period. Because of that the fish never really got fired up.

"The wind usually always blows here on Toledo Bend, and if for some reason it doesn't the fish react. The fish don't bite as well and it makes it tougher on us to try to catch them."
