Points For Blomqvist In Opening Race Of Weekend

It was a race of mixed emotions this afternoon for the Jagonya Ayam with Carlin team as the cars took to the track for the fourth round of the 2014 FIA Formula Three European Championship. Tom Blomqvist made the most of his race to come home in a strong fourth position however Antonio Giovinazzi was an early casualty. The Italian racer was involved in a collision in the opening laps which took him out of contention from third. Team mate Sean Gelael once again fought well from his starting position, gaining places to finish 13th.

As the lights went out Giovinazzi, who had lined up in second on the grid, was slightly slower to get off the line than Ed Jones in the sister Carlin car. Jones was then able to steal the position from him and move up to second. Giovinazzi fell to third however was close to the race leaders as he attempted to move his way back up to the front. However all of his hard work was for nothing when just a few corners later he was caught in an incident with Prema Powerteam’s Nicholas Latifi – with the incident taking both drivers out of the race.

As a result the safety car was released while the cars were cleared from the circuit. In the melee Blomqvist had to run wide to avoid a separate incident and found himself dropping back through the grid with a long hard race ahead of him. Gelael meanwhile had enjoyed a fantastic start and had already moved his Volkswagen powered Dallara up to 15th – and was looking racy throughout the opening laps.

When the safety car pulled in to the pit lane to mark the restart of the race it was Blomqvist who looked to be involved in the closest action on track. He and Felix Rosenqvist were running close together however it was the Jagonya Ayam with Carlin racer who came out on top. Blomqvist by this point had moved up to fifth position and was chasing to close the gap to Jordan King ahead. Blomqvist was to make up one further position on the final lap of the race when Esteban Ocon suddenly dropped through the field with a problem meaning that the British racer picked up valuable championship points for fourth.

Gelael also enjoyed a race full of fighting action. Once again he was able to show his pace and ability to gain positions despite a tough qualifying session. Driving well, he crossed the line to take 13th position.

Blomqvist said, ‘We were a little fortunate on the final lap to move up to fourth position but it’s very good to come away with more points. It was a tough first lap, there was a collision at the hairpin and I had to run completely off track to avoid it which meant I lost quite a few places, however the pace was there and we were able to prove it once I had passed Felix [Rosenqvist] for fifth. Now we look ahead to qualifying and hope to get a little further up the field ready for the next two races.’

Sean added, ‘Our race pace was once again really good, I was able to make another strong start off the line and continue to pass cars during the race. In the end we finished 13th which is a good result for us and I’m happy with how the race went. We will continue to build over the course of the weekend for sure.’

A second qualifying session will take place later this afternoon at 15.40 local time.
