Antonelli Delivers Jerez Front Row. Bastianini To Start From 15th Place

Niccolò Antonelli claimed today at Jerez a fantastic front row start on the grid for tomorrow’s Grand Prix of Spain: aboard the Junior Team GO&FUN Moto3 KTM machine, the youngster from Cattolica emerged as the second fastest rider on track after a close qualifying session, beaten only by Championship leader Jack Miller. This second place represents Niccolò’s career best qualifying result, improving the third place achieved at Assen and Misano in 2012, and at Sepang in 2013.

His team-mate, debutant Enea Bastianini, will start tomorrow from the fifth row with the 15th fastest time, 1’47”535: for the 16-year-old rider from Rimini, who is leading the “rookie of the year” standings, this is the best qualifying of the season.

NICCOLO' ANTONELLI (2nd - 1'46"788)
“I'm very happy about this second place: after the recent performance below our expectations, this result might look a bit strange, but actually it’s an achievement we deserve. After the race in Argentina we talked a lot inside the Team: a very useful exchange of views in order to face race weekends in a different and more efficient way, more focused on a goal, that’s to get as prepared as possible ahead of Sunday’s race. So far we have done a good job, but there is still something missing, so we will continue to work hard to try to bring home a good result. We need it”.

ENEA BASTIANINI (15th - 1'47"535)
“Unfortunately our qualifying didn’t go as planned, because we haven’t been able to set a lap time good enough to start a little ahead on the grid. I was always alone on track, so I didn’t take any slipstream: this is a mistake, but it’s also a lesson to learn for the future. It's a shame, because on this track, that I know very well, I hoped for a better result. The race, however, is tomorrow”.

“Today Niccolò performed really well, in line with our expectations: he did a great job and as a result he set a good lap time. I'm happy also because this second place is definitely good to cheer him up: we all need, like him, a positive result and this is a good start, even if we need to wait tomorrow’s race, when we will have the opportunity to do really well. I'm sorry for Bastianini, who set a great lap time, considering that he has not taken advantage of any sliptream; otherwise, he would probably be able to start a bit ahead on the grid and this is why Enea is a bit upset, and I understand that. Anyway, he did a great job”.
