Simeon Takes Valuable Points At Jerez Whilst Baldassarri Falls

Xavier Siméon put on display a strong performance today at Jerez to claim the 7th position in the Spanish Grand Prix aboard the Team Federal Oil Gresini Moto2 Suter machine. Started from the 12th position on the grid following a qualifying below the expectations, the Belgian was slowed by traffic in the early stages, then he was able to recover five positions; in the latter part of the race, however, the performance drop of the rear tyre didn’t allow him to follow the riders in front of him - Spaniard Vinales and Salom.

Lorenzo Baldassarri - Team Gresini Moto2 - crashed five laps into the race when trying to pass Julian Simon at the last corner: the 17-year-old Italian suffered a dislocation of the right shoulder.

“During this weekend we have always been consistent, but we missed something to be fast also in hot conditions: we worked a lot, and actually in the race today the situation has improved, but not enough to fight for the podium; anyway, we knew that it would have been difficult, starting so far back on the grid. I made a good start, but then I was slowed by traffic, with Cortese who also did some dangerous maneuvers, but after that I managed to make up some positions. I finally tried to follow Vinales, but the performance of the rear tire was dropping down, so it was not possible. I gave my best to the end to take the points: after all, we can be happy with the race today, though of course the seventh place is not where we want to be”.

“My shoulder hurts, but especially I feel angry: I was going well in the early stages of the race, although the rear tyre started to slide after only three laps. The group of riders in front of me was opening a gap as I was slowed down by Simon, so I tried to overtake him at the last corner, but he closed the line, touching me and making me fall. More or less, the same situation that has happened last March in Qatar…”.

“We knew it wouldn’t be easy today, starting so far back on the grid, but Xavier did a good race. In a hard fought championship like this, it’s important to collect points even when everything doesn’t go as planned, and today we did it. Our confidence remains intact and, fundamentally, we know the direction to follow to improve, so we believe that we can be back on top very soon. I’m sorry for Baldassarri, who dislocated his shoulder in the fall: like all young riders, Lorenzo has a fighting spirit, but he must give himself a little more time”.
