Nurburgring GT OPEN Report

Excellent start of the season for Joel Camathias in the International GT Open 2014. At the Nürburgring, the Swiss driver has finished twice in the ‘Top 6’, conquering a sixth and a fifth at the wheel of the Ferrari F458 GT3 entered by Black Bull Swiss Racing. The weekend of the Helvetic squad had begun with the surprise of being included by the organizers in SuperGT, the top category, given the quality of the driver line-up. Despite the very short notice to up-grade the car, the Swiss team did a great job.

Saturday, in Race 1 that he raced alone (Mirko Venturi was busy with the WEC at Spa, where he won in GTE Am), Joel ualified 8th, took an excellent start and stayed always with the front-runners, finishing 6th.

On Sunday, for Race 2 and with the driver duo reunited, Venturi did an excellent first stint after qualifying in 4th, and Joel was 3rd after the pit stop, fighting for the podium for a long time before having to let past the reigning champion, Montermini. Unfortunately, one position was lost at the start of the very last lap, when Ramos touched Joel at the end of the straight, sending him into a spin.

Joel Camathias:
“At this very moment, right after Race 2, there is a little bit of frustration for having lost fourth position after being hit by Ramos at the end of the straight. It’s a pity because Mirko and I had done a brilliant race. Mirko was very fast at the beginning and I was able to keep fourth against cars performing much more. On Saturday too, when I raced alone, we were fighting with the front-runners and it was fun to be involved in many duels. The team has done a great work, especially after the last-minute ‘promotion’ into the SuperGT category. It is obvious that we were taken a little bit by surprise and that we needed more time to adjust the car. But, despite the short notice, we took up the challenge, proved competitive and obtained two good results. That’s the main take-away of the weekend.”
