Scott Sheldon Finishes 13th In First ARCA Race At Talladega

Saturday’s ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards event at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway was not only Scott Sheldon’s first restrictor plate race, but also his first stock car race. With help from his No. 20 Allegiant Travel Chevrolet team, Sheldon completed every lap and finished the International Motorsports Hall of Fame 200 in the 13th position.

“I had a lot of fun out there,” said Sheldon. “Restrictor plate racing is calm in the beginning when everyone is taking it easy, but when you get towards the end of the race, business starts to pick up. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be in such a fast racecar and the No. 20 Allegiant Travel team did a great job at the shop and here at the track.”

Sheldon started the ARCA Racing Series event from the 16th position, one row in front of his teammate Spencer Gallagher. Spotter Joey Coulter quickly cleared Sheldon to the preferred lane on the bottom, as the No. 20 Allegiant Travel Chevrolet was scored in 12th-place. On lap 25, the Las Vegas native was shuffled back to the 21st position and logged laps in a three-car draft behind the lead pack.

As the first half of the 76-lap event went caution-free, strategy ran wild up and down pit road, as green flag stops were a must. On lap 35, with Sheldon in the 16th-place, the leaders began to hit pit road for their scheduled stops. Crew Chief Jeff Stankiewicz called his driver to pit road on lap 40 for fuel only. Once the field cycled through pit stops, the Allegiant Travel Chevrolet held the 13th position.

On lap 56, the only caution flag was displayed with Sheldon inside the top-10. Stankiewicz told Sheldon to remain on the racetrack and not visit pit road. As the field restarted on lap 64, Sheldon took off from the outside lane in the 10th position. The racing action heated up in the final 10 laps and Sheldon continued to keep his car on the yellow line. During the final lap, Sheldon received contact from a fellow competitor but was able to keep his Allegiant Travel Impala straight and cross the finish line in 13th-place.

The next event for GMS Racing will be the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway on Friday, May 9, 2014. The SFP 250 starts at 8:30PM ET, with live television coverage airing on FOX Sports 1. The Motor Racing Network will also have the live radio broadcast.
