2014 Kansas: Tyler Young NASCAR Truck Race Preview

This weekend's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) SFP 250 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City will not only mark the series third stop on the 2014 schedule, it will also mark Tyler Young's track debut at the 1.5-mile tri-oval. The Midwestern track is one of 13 venues the Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender will visit for the first time this season. As the first intermediate track on the 2014 schedule, and the type of track Young has the most experience on, the Midland, Texas native hopes to become the third driver in 14 series starts to win on his first attempt in the "Sunflower State."

A penny for your thoughts: Tyler Young, Driver, No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado -
Can you assess your year so far?
"Our practice went well in Daytona; I believe we were top-10 in one of the sessions, which was impressive, considering it was my first time there. Qualifying was cancelled, but we had a top-20 starting spot and were running in the top-10 before getting caught up in the 'big one,' which left us with a 34th-place finish. In Martinsville, we unloaded pretty decent and had a track-best starting position, based on practice times. Unfortunately, we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time during the race and got wrapped up in someone else's mess early. We made several attempts to fix the damage, but I eventually lost the power steering so I had to park it early. It's been a tough start to the season, but I wouldn't write us off just yet. The guys have been working hard and we have been to the wind tunnel a few times. I think we have all the right pieces, we just need some luck on our side."

A penny for your thoughts: Bryan Berry, Crew Chief, No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado -
As a rookie, what can Tyler expect as he makes his debut at Kansas Speedway this week?
"With the repave last year, the racing groove will more than likely be at the bottom of the track. As the track wears, the groove will spread out. It will be interesting to see how much grip we've lost since last year, because of the winters they see in Kansas. Therefore, you really have no clue how the track will react until we get on it Thursday for practice. The racing there was pretty decent last year, for a newly paved track, but I'm certain a lot of strategy will play out in order to gain track position this year."

Fast & Fun Facts:
• Young will make his Kansas Speedway debut in this weekend's SFP 250.
• In 13 series races at the 1.5-mile track, two drivers have won in their track debut; Ricky Hendrick (2001), and Clint Bowyer (2011).
• This weekend's SFP 250 marks the 14th annual Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway. In 13 races, there have been 13 different winners.
• Young won the season-opening DNQ Karting Series race at GoPro Motorplex in Mooresville, N.C. on Saturday, April 19. The series features racers, mechanics and employees of the racing industry. Following his win, Young leads the series with 14 points, one point over second place Corey Lajoie.
• Calling the shots for the No. 02 Young's Motorsports team is veteran crew chief Bryan Berry. As an 11-year veteran of the NCWTS, Berry has 179 starts to his resume, including 7 starts at Kansas Speedway. His success includes two top-10 finishes at the 1.5-mile tri-oval with Brendan Gaughan in 2005 and 2008.
A "Racer's Mom":
Becky Young, Tyler's mom, is a mother to three - Ashley, Scott and Tyler. As a "racer's mom" her special time with Tyler was their one-on-one time driving to the track each weekend. With Tyler's sister and brother off at college and Tyler's dad at the track getting Tyler's car ready for the race weekend, Becky embraced her time with Tyler on the way to the track on Friday afternoons, after picking him up from school. She claims, "The fun was in the journey getting there." Happy Mother's Day Becky!

Rookie Race:
After two races, Young is ranked fourth in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year battle, a mere two points behind third place Mason Mingus and 15 points behind leader Tyler Reddick.

Chassis History:
Young's Motorsports will unload chassis 002 for the 14th annual SFP 250 at Kansas Speedway on Friday night. "Third times a charm," is the same chassis the No. 02 team unloaded at Rockingham and Charlotte in 2013, but since has been rebuilt and was recently at the wind tunnel in preparation for this weekend's event.

Rearview Mirror-Martinsville:
Following a track-best start of 23rd for the Kroger 250 at Martinsville Speedway, Young made contact with the No. 35 machine under caution, leaving the No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado with extensive damage on the front-end. The Young's Motorsports team made numerous trips down pit road to fix the damage and eventually went behind pit wall to replace the radiator. Unfortunately, the power steering dissipated and sidelined Young for the remainder of the 250-lap event, resulting in a 31st-place finish.

Truck Series Fast Facts:
• 2014 marks Young's first full-time season in the NCWTS
• Young has made 13 starts in the series since 2012
• First start - Rockingham (2012)
• Best start - 13th, Bristol (2012)
• Best finish - 19th, Texas Motor Speedway (June, 2013)
