Spencer Pumpelly Returns to Le Mans

Spencer Pumpelly will make his third trip to the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans this June, joining Flying Lizard Motorsports teammate Seth Neiman in the GTE-Am No. 66 JMW Motorsport Ferrari 458.

Both of Pumpelly's previous trips to Le Sarthe were with in a GTE-Am Porsche 911 GT3 RSR partnered with Neiman. In 2014, Pumpelly and Neimen will team up once again, this time working with JMW Motorsport and driver Abdulaziz Alfaisal. The race will be Pumpelly’s first in a Ferrari.

"I'm am incredibly honored to be going back to Le Mans representing the U.S. and Flying Lizard Motorsports,” Pumpelly said. “I am so grateful to Seth and the team for adding me to their Le Mans roster in 2011 and 2012 which opened the door to me joining full-time in 2013. The Lizards have a long history at Le Mans and the fans missed us last year, so I'm pumped that Seth and I can rekindle that tradition thanks to this opportunity with JMW."

Pumpelly's first trip to Le Mans was a heartbreaking one, as the team was leading the GTE-Am category with less than six hours remaining when the engine expired. The team fared slightly better in 2012 when Pumpelly, Neiman and Patrick Pilet held a strong class lead with five hours to go, but needed to pit for repairs when the car made contact with the guardrail. The trio went on to finish fourth. Both experiences, however, have left Pumpelly hungry to stand on the most famous podium in motorsport.

"In 2011 we had a strong class lead, but ended up with a DNF and in 2012 we were one position shy of a podium,” Pumpelly recalled. “To be that close to standing on the Le Mans podium two years in-a-row really hurts, but it lights a fire in you too. I'm dying to get back and give it another try. Le Mans is the race every sports car driver wants to win."

This year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans takes place June 14 – 15. Prior to the race, Pumpelly and Neiman will attend the Le Mans test day on Sunday, June 1. This will require the pair to fly overnight after racing in the Detroit Grand Prix, May 30 – 31.
