“You cannot compare these stages to what I have been used to the majority of my career! I have no experience of these kinds of roads – there is so much variation and so much that you have to watch out for. On gravel, with very narrow and tricky roads, is it not the easiest of tasks.

“It’s been a difficult morning, but we are here and that is the most important thing. My approach has been very safe – in fact I don’t think it could get much safer for my standards! We know where we can improve, but that is not our goal here this weekend. Our aim is to finish and to gain the experience we need.
