Status GP Barcelona GP3 Free Practice Report

Status Grand Prix started the GP3 Series season in style with Richie Stanaway topping the times in the first free practice session at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya.

The New Zealander leapt to the top of the order in the closing stages, despite hitting traffic on his first big effort at a late-session hot lap. He then regrouped and went fastest of all by 0.329 seconds.

Britain’s Nick Yelloly finished the session in sixth position. He was fourth in the early stages, before improving to third on his second run. His final effort was hampered by yellow flags, although he went fastest of all in the first sector.

GP3 newcomer Alfonso Celis Jr finished the session in 22nd place, just 1.5 seconds slower than Stanaway’s overall best. The 17-year-old Mexican was hampered when a car emerged from the pits in front of him and, in avoidance, he flat-spotted his Pirelli P Zero tyres.

Qualifying for this, the Spanish Grand Prix support round of the GP3 season, starts at 0945 on Saturday, with the first race at 1720 on Saturday, the second at 0925 on Sunday.

Driver quotes:

Richie Stanaway
“Everything is good. It was good to top the session but we’ve got to be mindful that obviously we’ll get very different track conditions over the rest of the weekend. We have to make sure we keep everything strong, not only for qualifying and the first race, but for the reversed-grid race as well. But I think it’s all pointing in the right direction.”

Nick Yelloly
“We went for a good time towards the end of the session but we had yellow flags, and I didn’t get to do anything. Even so, I went purple on the first sector but then I had to back out of it. But I’m sure we’ll be in the ballpark and we’ve definitely got a lot of pace for qualifying and the races.”

Alfonso Celis Jr
“We had some issues when a car came in front of me and I nearly crashed into him – he wasn’t minding his mirrors. On the one side that’s frustrating, but on the other I have nothing to lose. It’s all about learning, and I’ve definitely done a lot of that from the data and from my day.”
