2014 Kansas: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The NASCAR Sprint Cup series makes its first 2014 visit to the 1.5-mile oval at Kansas Speedway. The 'Cup' series has been racing at the 1.5-mile d-shaped oval since 2001, an inaugural event that was won by 4-time champion Jeff Gordon.

The banking is 15 degrees in the turns with 10.4 degrees on the 2,685 foot frontstretch and five degrees on the 2,207 foot backstretch. If all the seats are sold, over 81,000 NASCAR fans will fill the grandstands today.

Over the 16 races run at Kansas, Jeff Gordon, 3-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart, 6-time champion Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth have each won twice. Gordon's first win was mentioned above, with his second coming a year later in 2002. Stewart's victories came in 2006 & 2009. Biffle won is 2007 & 2010 while Johnson won in 2008 and 2011. Kenseth joined the list of two time winners after a victory in 2013 - his first came in 2012.

One interesting note is that in 16 races, Kansas been won from Pole four times: (Joe Nemechek - 2004, Jimmie Johnson - 2008, and twice in 2013 - Matt Kenseth & Kevin Harvick). The event has also been won once from a second place (Jeff Gordon - 2001) starting position.

Looking ahead to the checkered flag, the question is who will be first to the finish line.

And there is no clear advantage held by any driver, as we've had seven different winners over the last eight races at Kansas.

Overall, eight out of 16 races have been won from the top-five starting positions. Starting up-front at Kansas does seem to be an advantage.

All three engine manufacturers have won over the three events. The last back-to-back wins by an engine manufacturer was Chevrolet in 2008/2009.

So today is anyone's race.

While the numbers don't line very well, we are going to call this race for Kevin Harvick who won the last event, and starts from Pole.

Should Harvick fail to secure the victory, keep an eye on Kenseth, he has the best stats over the last four events with two wins, and three top-fives.

Enjoy today's race! It's sure to be another exciting NASCAR Sprint Cup event.
