Lynn Storms To Pole In Barcelona

Carlin’s Alex Lynn has taken pole position for the first round of the 2014 GP3 Series. The Red Bull Junior managed his Pirelli tyres perfectly on his debut in the series, setting the fastest lap around the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona in the final minutes of qualifying this morning. Team mate Emil Bernstorff also qualified in the top ten in seventh place, while Luis Sa Silva will start race one from 21st.

As the first qualifying session of the season got underway today, it was Sa Silva who was the quickest Carlin man out on track. The Angolan racer, who was third fastest in yesterday’s practice session, was well within the top ten in the early stages of qualifying. Team mates Lynn and Bernstorff left it a little later to set their first flying laps, with Lynn immediately going P2 with his first effort.

By the mid-point of the session, the majority of the drivers were in the pits for new rubber. Lynn was still second quickest, Bernstorff was eighth and Sa Silva 12th. After several minutes waiting in the pit lane, the Carlin men headed back out for a second attempt to improve their qualifying positions. By now, several drivers had improved and Lynn had dropped to fifth while Bernstorff had dropped to ninth.

With three minutes of the session to go, Lynn set his personal best first sector and finished off the lap to take provisional pole. In a competitive session, several drivers tried to improve but none could beat the young Brit’s time. Team mate Bernstorff put in a late effort to improve back up to seventh, while Sa Silva hit traffic on both his flying laps and wasn’t able to post a second competitive time and consequently was left frustrated in 21st.

Pole man Lynn reflected, “It was a good session, we knew the times would be close. I think the team knew that qualifying maybe wasn’t their strongest point, so we they have worked really hard on that over the winter and in testing and it paid off today. I wasn’t quite happy with the car on the first run and after making a few changes and trying a balance run on the second set of tyres, I was able to put a lap together. We’ve done some good work too on race runs, so the focus now is on the start.”

“Seventh is ok, but I’m a little disappointed not to be higher”, said Bernstorff. “I think there was a little more pace in the car which didn’t quite come together this morning. There is a lot we can do from there though and we have two long races ahead of us.”

Sa Silva added, “Obviously I’m frustrated after showing good pace [P3] in practice yesterday. I just wasn’t able to put a time together as I hit traffic on my flying laps. My focus now is to use the pace we know we have and steer clear of the incidents and make up as many places as possible.”

Race one will take place at 17.20 later today.
