2014 Kansas: Tyler Young NASCAR Truck Race Recap

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) blew in to Kansas Speedway in Kansas City for the 14th annual SFP 250 on Friday night, the third stop on the 2014 schedule, and the first Truck Series event under the lights at the 1.5-mile tri-oval. Tyler Young, who made his track debut, qualified 15th in the series' first multi-segment, elimination-style qualifying session on Friday afternoon, and showcased a strong performance in the first-half of the SFP 250.

The Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender fell as far back as 23rd in the early stages of the 167-lap event, when he was forced to pit road under the first caution, at lap two, to repair the right front nose and fender of the No. 02 machine after running over a piece of debris from the 17 truck. A never give up attitude and hard work to get the handling right on his Chevrolet Silverado allowed Young to make his way through the field, running as high as eighth, before being collected in a lap-86 accident in Turn 2. The hard contact with the outside wall and eventually the No. 29 machine, would send the No. 02 back to the garage on a wrecker and relegate Young to a 23rd-place finish, his third DNF of the season.

Notes:
Friday night's SFP 250 was Young's 14th career Truck Series start and first start at Kansas Speedway

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series completed its first multi-segment, elimination-style Keystone Light Pole qualifying on Friday afternoon. Young advanced to round 2 of 3, securing the 15th starting position for the SFP 250

Young's 15th-place starting position was a career-best start on a track 1.5-miles in length or larger

Young recovered from right front damage, after running over a bumper bar on lap 2, to run as high as 8th before being collected in a lap 86 accident involving three trucks in Turn 2

The damage to the No. 02 Chevrolet sidelined the rookie driver for the remainder of the 167-lap event, relegating Young to a 23rd-place finish

Kyle Busch won the 14th annual SFP 250, his 37th NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory and first win at Kansas Speedway

There were 15 lead changes between six different drivers and 9 cautions for 46 laps

Tyler Young was the third-highest finishing 2014 Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender

The Young's Motorsports team will return to action on Friday, May 16th, for the N.C. Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway - the fourth stop on the 2014 NCWTS schedule

Quote - Tyler Young:

"We qualified 15th and just fine tuned on our truck in the first half of the race. I was really struggling with a loose in, tight in the center feel and the guys did a really good job on pit road making adjustments to get it right. At about the half-way point I really thought we had it figured out. Unfortunately, there was a wreck in front of us, I checked up, and I got run over from behind. I hate it for all my guys; everyone has worked so hard and tonight is a true testament of what this team is capable of. We have a new truck in the paint shop that we will take to Charlotte and hopefully transfer what I learned here tonight to unload strong next week."
