Lynn Dominates To Take Victory At Barcelona

Carlin’s Alex Lynn put in a flawless drive to take a lights to flag victory in his first GP3 race this afternoon. The Red Bull Junior led from pole position at the Circuit de Catalunya and claimed the fastest lap of the race to get his 2014 GP3 campaign off to the best possible start. Team mate Emil Bernstorff was in sixth place until he ran off into the gravel on lap one, while Luis Sa Silva made up positions to cross the line 16th.

The first race of the season got underway at a warm Barcelona today, after an aborted start due to a stall for second place man Marvin Kirchhofer. With Kirchhofer able to re-join the grid, the race finally got underway, with Lynn leading the field into the first corner. Behind him it was a chaotic scene, with cars three wide in the opening lap tussle and team mate Bernstorff in the thick of the action.

Starting from seventh on the grid, Bernstorff did well to avoid any incidents into the first corner and was well within the fight for the leading positions. The GP3 rookie was pushing hard when running round the outside of turn five, but ran off and was left stranded in the gravel.

Lynn meanwhile was still running in first, 1.6 seconds ahead of Jimmy Eriksson who was pushing hard to close the gap. Sa Silva meanwhile had also avoided any incidents and was running in 17th place. A tough move from Sa Silva on Alfonso Celis Jnr saw the Angolan moved up to 16th on lap 12.

A relatively uneventful race for Lynn saw him control the pace from the front, taking victory by 2.4 seconds on his GP3 debut. Sa Silva maintained his position to take 16th at the flag.

Speaking about his race, Lynn said, “My start was ok, it probably wasn’t the best of my career but it was enough to keep the lead. There was a lot of dicing behind me which probably helped me to pull out a gap. From then on I was just managing my tyres. The car feels amazing and although it’s a cliché to say it, I want to say thanks to my team. The work that has been done in preparation for this and the hours that have been put in before the car even hit the track is the reason for our success today.”
