Merzouga Rally Meets Tina Meier

Last year the Merzouga Rally saw among the competitors Patsy Quick, Rosa Romero and Covadonga Fernandez Suarez. Waiting to see them back, we would like to introduce three girls that will join the race this year from the 18th to the 24th of October in Morocco.

Four times at the starting line of the Dakar Rally, Tina is well known on the rallies as a rider as well as with his team of girls, the “Dirtgirls”.

Tina, can you tell us about your experience in the rally world?
“My experience in the rally world is a mix between hard enduro like the Red Bull Romaniacs, enduro rallies like the Breslau Rally and desert rallies like the Tuareg Rally in Morocco and of course the Dakar. I managed to be 4 times at the starting line - which is the harder part of the race - the two weeks riding is the cherry on the cake, your reward for surviving the preparation of this big event”.

How did it come the idea of Dirtgirls?
“The idea of the name “Dirtgirls” was born more than 15 years ago during a little orientation rally. My sister and I had to give us a team name - so we created "the Dirtgirls". Since that time it is a growing network of women with a passion for offroad riding. With the Girls Camps and the Rally Coaching of women, I like to empower them to explore their skills. Of course they need some technics, but most of all they need to deal with mental obstacles. My work is more a change facilitator than a riding teacher”.

With how many riders are you joining the Merzouga Rally? Can you present your girls?
“At the moment we are three riders at the Dirtgirls Rally Team. Myself, Susanne Kohlbacher and Christine Steinkrauss. Susanne started her offroad-riding in 2011 in one of my Girls Camps at Merzouga and she is addicted to the challenge of rally riding. Christine is an experienced rider. We met at the German Enduro Championship in 2007. Since then our ways crossed from time to time and she did several rallies. Together we started last year at the Serres Rally and now we are looking forward to ride the Merzouga Rally”.

What are your expectations for the Merzouga Rally?
“I expect a very well organized rally with a big focus on the security for the riders. I know the area very well and expect a big variety of fantastic tracks”.

How a rally and especially an African rally as Merzouga can be attractive to female riders?
“In a rally you have long days and a road book which guides you the way. Riding fast alone doesn’t help. There are a lot of skills that are necessary to finish a rally. A key element is to make as less mistakes as possible in terms of navigation. This will bring you in the front together with a safe riding, which means avoiding accidents. Riding reliable and constant - not MX-style - is a more female riding style. I think that if you don´t risk too much and you finish each day safe, you will make it to the podium of the event. And of course a desert rally is very attractive, once you fell in love with the desert, you just want to go back”.
